Pirates Clip Cubs

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Travis Snider smacked a grand slam during a five-run sixth inning as the Pirates held on to clip the Cubs 5-4 in the opener of a three-game series at PNC Park. Pedro Alvarez walked in the other run for the Bucs, who have won two straight and six of their last seven. Wandy Rodriguez surrendered three runs over six innings to improve to 5-2. Jason Grilli gave up a run in the ninth but held on for his 18th save. Matt Garza permitted just one hit over five scoreless innings in his season debut. Garza, who has been sidelined with a strained left lat muscle, helped his own cause with a two-run double. Darwin Barney went 4-for-4 with an RBI and Starlin Castro also plated a run for the Northsiders, who have dropped two in-a-row and four-of-six overall. James Russell fell to 1-1 with the loss.

 

Cardinals Clobber Padres

(San Diego, CA) -- Daniel Descalso went 3-for-3 with a grand slam and five RBI as the Cardinals clobbered the Padres, 10-2.  Carlos Beltran knocked in a pair of runs for the Redbirds, who have won two-of-three. Adam Wainwright fanned six over 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball to improve to 6-3. Edinson Volquez allowed five runs in six innings to fall to 3-5. San Diego's winning streak was stopped at three.

 

White Sox Edge Red Sox

(Chicago, IL) -- Jeff Keppinger hit a two-run homer to back a strong outing from Jose Quintana as the White Sox edged the Red Sox, 3-1. Quintana took a no-hitter into the seventh.  e improved to 3-1 after striking out five over 6 1/3 scoreless innings. Addison Reed earned his 16th save. Alex Rios doubled in a run for Chicago, which will look to sweep the three-game set on Wednesday. Dustin Pedroia scored on an error for Boston. Felix Doubrount allowed two runs in six innings to fall to 3-2 with the tough-luck loss.
