Three Area Teams Advance in Regional Baseball Thursday

Three area teams advanced Thursday in regional tournament baseball.

St. Anthony moved into the championship game of the Altamont 1A Regional with a 9-0 win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City. 

The Bulldogs plated two runs in the first inning, added three runs in the third, and scored two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings, pounding out 11 hits in the process.

Eli Levitt got the win for St. Anthony, giving up just three hits and a walk in 5-2/3 innings of work, striking out nine. Brody Niebrugge pitched the final 1-1/3 innings and was untouched, getting three of the four outs via strikeouts.

Silas Buzzard took the loss for the Bobcats, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits, walking three and fanning three in five innings. Clayton Wojcik pitched the last two innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits with one strikeout.

Brock Fearday tripled and doubled for St. Anthony, driving in a run and scoring twice. Colton Fearday doubled, singled and walked, scoring twice and driving in a run. Levitt singled twice, scored and drove in a run. Angela Mendella drove in a run and scored. Eli Link singled and drove in a run. Samuel Link doubled, scored and drove in a run. Beau Adams doubled and singled and scored twice. Will Hoene singled and walked and drove in a run. Niebrugge drew a walk.

Buzzard, along with Quincy Schlanser and Wes Radloff got the hits for the Bobcats.

St. Anthony will play the winner of today's Altamont vs. Brownstown/St. Elmo game for the regional championship at 10am Saturday at Altamont.

South Central moved into the championship of the North Clay 1A Regional with a 5-2 win over Red Hill.

Red Hill held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth, but the Cougars scored three times to take the lead in the bottom of the frame, and added two runs in the sixth to seal the win.

Anthony Buonaura got the win for South Central, allowing one earned run on four hits and three walks in six innings of work, fanning five batters. Aiden Dodson pitched the final inning, a clean inning with two strikeouts.

Ethan Watwood led the Cougars' attack with a triple and double, scoring twice and driving in a run. Brandt Hiestand doubled and singled, scoring twice and driving in a run. Chase Thompson singled and drove in a run. Spencer Johannes singled and scored.

South Central will now take on North Clay/Clay City at 9am Saturday at Louisville. The Saturday start time was moved up in hopes of getting the game in between showers. The gates will open at 8am.

The Windsor/Stew-Stras Hatchets advanced to the championship game of the Casey-Westfield 1A Regional with a 10-0 six-inning win over Tri-County.

The Hatchets jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, then added single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings before scoring three times in the sixth to claim the win.

WSS scored their 10 runs on just seven hits. Tyler Wetherell homered and singled for the Hatchets, scoring twice and driving in three runs. Jordan Wittenberg doubled, singled and walked, scoring twice and driving in a run. Austin Wittenberg singled and walked and scored four times. Gavan Wernsing walked, scored a run and drove home two runs. Graham Kasey singled and drove in two runs. Carter Chaney singled and drove in a run. 

Graham Kasey went the distance for Windsor/Stew-Stras, pitching a three-hit shutout while walking two and striking out 13.

The Hatchets will take on today's Casey-Westfield vs. Neoga game wiinner for the regional championship.
