Mets Edge Bucs

(Flushing, NY) -- Mike Baxter's pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Mets a 3-2 win over the Pirates in the opener of a four-game series.  Marlon Byrd and Ike Davis plated a run apiece for the Mets, who have won four-of-six. Dillon Gee tossed five-plus innings of one-run ball in a no-decision.  Bobby Parnell got the win to go to 4-0. Pedro Alvarez hit a solo homer and knocked in both runs for the Pirates, who have dropped four-of-five. Jason Grilli was charged with the loss.

 

Corbin Outduels Hamels As D'backs Edge Phillies

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Patrick Corbin outdueled Cole Hamels as the Diamondbacks edged the Phillies, 2-1, in the opener of a four-game series at Chase Field. Corbin gave up just one run on four hits and two walks over six-and-a-third innings as he upped his mark to 5-0. Heath Bell closed it out for his third save in as many games and fourth overall. Corbin and Gerardo Parra plated a run each for the D'backs, who have won four in-a-row and five of their last six. Kevin Frandsen drove in the lone run on a fielder's choice in the seventh inning for the Phils, who have lost four-of-six. Hamels allowed two runs on six hits and five walks over six frames as he fell to 1-5.

Braves Double Up Giants

(San Francisco, CA) -- Brian McCann went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI as the Braves took care of the Giants, 6-3, in the opening game of their four-game set at AT&T Park. It was McCann's first long ball of the season. Julio Teheran improved to 2-0, pitching seven strong innings, giving up three runs and seven hits. Craig Kimbrel locked up his 100th career save. The Braves are 21-13. Buster Posey connected on his fifth homer along with two hits and three RBI for San Francisco, which is 20-15. Ryan Vogelsong's struggles continued allowing six runs in four-and-one-third innings. Vogelsong ERA is 7.78 and he fell to 1-3.

Indians Bomb A's To Complete Four-Game Sweep

(Cleveland, OH) -- Jason Kipnis, Nick Swisher and Mark Reynolds all homered to power the Indians to a 9-2 win over the A's in Cleveland. Scott Kazmir struck out 10 while allowing just five hits and one run in six innings for his second win.  The Tribe raced out to a 9-0 lead in the fifth inning and completed a sweep of the four-game series. Bartolo Colon was roughed up for eight hits and six runs in just four innings to fall to 3-and-2 with the loss. Josh Donaldson went 2-for-3 with a solo homer for Oakland, which has lost five of its last six games. Adam Rosales also had two hits for the A's in defeat.

Royals Salvage On Against O's

(Baltimore, MD) -- The Royals avoided being swept by the Orioles behind three home runs in their 6-2 win at Camden Yards. Eric Hosmer hit his first home run of the season, while Alex Gordon smashed his sixth and Mike Moustakas continued to heat up with his third.  Hosmer and Gordon were each 2-for-4 with two RBI.  Jeremy Guthrie improved to 5-0, allowing two runs, one of which was earned, and seven hits across six innings. Chris Davis hit a solo shot, his 10th of the year, for Baltimore.  Freddy Garcia was tagged with the loss giving up four runs in six innings. The Orioles took two-of-three.

Twins Top Red Sox

(Boston, MA) -- Oswaldo Arcia lifted a two-run home run to guide the Twins to 5-3 win over the Red Sox.  The Twins won three straight to take the four-game series at Fenway Park. Kevin Correia allowed three runs over five-and-a-third innings for the win. Glen Perkins tallied his eighth save for Minnesota, which has won four-of-five. John Lackey gave up five runs, one earned, while striking out eight in seven frames for the loss.  Daniel Nava, Dustin Pedroia and Stephen Drew each knocked in a run for Boston, which has lost six-of-seven overall.

Angels Rally Past Astros

(Houston, TX) -- Alberto Callaspo's sac-fly in the eighth plated the go-ahead run as the Angels rallied for a 6-5 win over the Astros. Mark Trumbo doubled in a pair in the eighth to help the Angels avoid a three-game sweep. Josh Hamilton and Brendan Harris hit solo homers, Garrett Richards was credited with his second win, and Ernesto Frieri earned a five-out save. Matt Domiguez had two hits and three RBI for Houston.  Hector Amrbiz was charged with the loss.

 

Yankees Edge Rockies In Rubber Match

(Denver, CO) -- Robinson Cano smacked his ninth home run of the season to lead the Yankees to a 3-1 win over the Rockies in the rubber match of a three-game series at a rainy Coors Field. The game was delayed nearly two hours due to rain. Vernon Wells and Chris Stewart also plated a run each for New York, which has won five of its last eight. CC Sabathia permitted just one run in four frames before the rain came. Adam Warren tossed one-and-a-third scoreless innings for his first win.  Mariano Rivera closed it out for his 13th save.  Carlos Gonzalez drove in the lone run on a sac-fly in the first inning for the Rockies, who have dropped four-of-six. Jeff Francis allowed two runs in four frames to fall to 1-3 with the loss.

 

Nats Nip Tigers

(Washington, DC) -- Ryan Zimmerman finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as the Nationals nipped the Tigers 5-4 to sweep the rain-shortened two-game series at Nationals Park.  Bryce Harper also drove in a run and scored a run, while Adam LaRoche and Ian Desmond plated a run each for the Nats, who have won four straight and six of their last seven overall.  Dan Haren scattered four runs and nine hits over six innings of work as he improved to 4-and-3. Rafael Soriano closed it out for his 12th save. Matt Tuiasosopo belted a three-run homer and Doug Fister knocked in the other run for Detroit, which swept a four-game set in Houston before this series. On the mound, Fister allowed five runs, four earned, in just three frames as he fell to 4-1 with the loss.
