Cardinals 3, Nationals 2

WASHINGTON -- The Cardinals' series opener against the Nationals was hardly dripping with the drama that encompassed the last meeting between these two clubs in the 2012 National League Division Series. But just as they did the last time they took the field at Nationals Park, the Cards escaped with a victory.

Monday's 3-2 win, which came in front of a crowd of 27,263, was highlighted by another stellar effort from rookie right-hander Shelby Miller. After being outdueled by Pittsburgh's A.J. Burnett in his first start on this 10-game road trip, Miller answered with his third straight quality start, and joined teammates Lance Lynn and Adam Wainwright with his third win of the season.

Reds 5, Cubs 4

CINCINNATI -- Every loss is tough to take, but Monday hurt a little more for the Cubs because they did nearly everything right.

Cesar Izturis' walk-off single with two outs in the 13th gave the Reds a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the Cubs, who had taken a two-run lead in the top of the inning on Luis Valbuena's two-run homer.

Valbuena connected off Alfredo Simon in the 13th, scoring Welington Castillo, who reached second on an error by third baseman Todd Frazier. For once, it looked as if the Cubs could capitalize on another team's mistakes.

Indians 3, White Sox 2

CHICAGO -- With all due respect to Justin Masterson and the Indians, Cleveland didn't completely win Monday's 3-2 series opener at U.S. Cellular Field as much as the White Sox gave it away.

Yes, Asdrubal Cabrera, mired in a 9-for-63 slump to start the season, delivered a two-run, two-out single in the eighth off Matt Thornton to erase a one-run lead. But it was the South Siders' physical and mental errors that put the Indians (8-10) in position for the comeback.

It's a painful trend that has clearly bothered manager Robin Ventura from the season's outset, with his White Sox team committing 13 errors in its 19 games.

Braves' Heyward Undergoes Appendectomy Surgery

(Denver, CO) -- Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward underwent successful appendectomy surgery on Monday night in Denver. The team was in town to start a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies on Monday, but their game was postponed due to snow. Heyward is out indefinitely but the team says he could be ready to return in a few weeks.
