Mattoon Claims Doubleheader Over Hearts; Area Roundup

Mattoon High School swept Effingham in a baseball doubleheader Saturday. In the opener, the Green Wave tallied all the runs it needed in the third inning and went on for a 3-0 victory.

Mattoon banged out 10 hits in the contest while the Hearts had four hits. Warren pitched the victory for Mattoon going all seven innings, allowing the four hits, two walks and striking out nine.

Frey had a single and a double for the Hearts.

In the second contest, Mattoon had just three hits but EHS committed six errors in an 11-2 loss.

Mattoon took a 6-0 first inning lead and never looked back. The Hearts tallied their two runs in the fifth inning. Mayfield had a single, double and two RBI while Heuerman had a double for the Hearts.

At Ramsey

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg claimed victories over Ramsey in a doubleheader Saturday.

The Blue Devils claimed the opener 12-2 with an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Allen had three hits and two RBI for the winners while Theis had two hits and an RBI and Leasher a hit and three RBI.

In the second game, Windsor/Stew-Stras won 15-4 with an 8-0 lead after two innings. Vonderheide, Allen, Theis and Warner had two hits each. Theis drove in four runs and had a home run, Allen and Vonderheide two hits each and Warner one.

North Clay (Louisville) picked up two victories at the South Central Wooden Bat Tournament Saturday.

North Clay blanked Casey-Westifeld 10-0 in six innings behind 10 hits.

Adam Cox was the winning pitcher, throwing a two-hitter with eight strikeouts to improve to 5-1. Walker had three hits and an RBI for the winners while Micklautz and Clifton had two hits each.

In the second contest, North Clay won 6-0 over South Central. The Cardinals tallied three runs in the third and never looked back. Cox had two singles and a solo home run. He finshed with two RBI. Hilderbrand had two hits and Britton a double and two RBI.

South Central was led by Dylan Smith with two singles.

South Central defeated Casey-Westfield 8-2. The Cougars stepped out to a 3-0 first inning lead and never looked back. Shawn Meyer pitched an eight-hitter with six strikeouts.

Fischer Tharp had a single, double and an RBI while Dan Diss and Shawn Meyer had two singles and an RBI each.

Sullivan claimed a 14-9 win over Cumberland. Sullivan had a five-run second and a six-run third.

Cumberland had seven hits in the contest led by Zach Poe and Godden with two singles each. Godden had two RBI and Poe one RBI. Cody Hornbeck also had two singles and drove in a run.
