Beltran, Wainwright Strong In Cards' Win Over Mets

(Port St. Lucie, FL) -- Adam Wainwright and Carlos Beltran were both strong for the Cardinals in Tuesday's 11-4 win over the Mets. Wainwright allowed two runs in six innings and picked up the win in his final tuneup before Opening Day. Beltran saw his first Grapefruit League action in nearly a month after nursing an injured toe and reached base three times. St. Louis will host the Nationals in Jupiter today.

The Cardinals will start the season without third baseman David Freese. The team announced Tuesday Freese will start the season on the disabled list due to his lingering back injury. The move comes a day after Freese seemed hopeful of being ready for Opening Day. St. Louis is targeting April 8 for Freese's return, which happens to be the Redbirds' home opener against the Reds.

Reds Pound Cubs

(Mesa, AZ) -- Jeff Samardzija allowed just one run in five innings but took the loss as the Cubs were crushed by the Reds, 11-1. Cincinnati put up nine runs in the ninth inning. Steve Clevenger went 2-for-2 and drove in the only run for Chicago with a ground-rule double in the seventh.  The Cubs head to Surprise today to face the Royals.

The Cubs officially cut two more players Tuesday.  Pitcher Zach Putnam and infielder Alberto Gonzalez were informed they would not be on the 25-man roster when Chicago breaks camp. Both players will stay with the team through the end of the exhibition season, which ends Saturday in Houston.

Sale Strong As Sox Dump Rangers

(Surprise, AZ) -- Chris Sale struck out five in four innings and allowed just one run as the White Sox dropped the Rangers 11-3 Tuesday in Surprise. It was the final tuneup for Sale before his Opening Day start next week.  Brandon Short poked a pair of homers in the victory. The White Sox host the Indians today in Glendale for their final Cactus League game of the spring.

The White Sox have placed left-hander John Danks on the 15-day disabled list. He continues to recover from shoulder surgery he underwent in August. The move is retroactive to March 22. Right-hander Dylan Axelrod was also named the team's fifth starter.

Yankees' Jeter To Miss Opening Day

(Tampa, FL) -- New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is set to miss his first Opening Day since 2001. The Yankee captain says it's disappointing to come to terms that he will begin the season on the disabled list. Jeter has experienced soreness in his surgically repaired ankle while playing this spring and will not break camp in Florida with the team this week.
