St. Anthony Splits Doubleheader; Area Roundup

BREESE -- Effingham St. Anthony High School split a baseball doubleheader with Breese Mater Dei Saturday.

The Bulldogs lost the opener 6-5. St. Anthony jumped out to a 2-0 lead and then committed five errors in the fourth inning leading to a six-run inning for Mater Dei.

"You cannot give a good team eight outs in one inning and expect to win," said St. Anthony Coach Kenny Miller. "Our kids know that and we know the value of defense. It is still early and we haven't been outside very much, but we just are not good enough to do that."

St. Anthony got on top with an RBI single by Austin Bushue who had two hits, then scored on an error in the top of the fifth and an RBI single by Jacob Schuette.

"Alex Hoelscher pitched very well in five innings, no earned runs and one walk," said Miller. "That's all we can ask of our pitching. Alex threw strikes and we just didn't make the routine plays.

"Ben Hecht led us with three hits and a run scored. Austin Bushue and Schuette also hit the ball well, both having two hits and an RBI. Jacob Lorenz and Neil Williams both had a hit apiece to round out the offense."

In the second game, St. Anthony scored a run in the top of the ninth to claim the 1-0 victory.

Hecht and Gardewine had another great pitching performance with Gardewine getting the win in nine innings. After six shutout innings by Hecht, Gardewine gave up one hit in three innings of relief. Hecht yielded only two hits and struck out 10 in six inings.

"Those two were the story in the second game," said Miller. "We didn't give them much help but both pitched well. They attacked the strike zone all day striking out 13 and yielding only three hits. I'm really happy we could get them a run and not ruin another good outing.

St. Anthony, ironically, got their run on two errors in the ninth inning after Jacob Lorenz reached on an error and moved to second on the overthrow, was late thrown out trying to steal. An intentional walk to Hecht proved costly as he was on the tailend of the double steal and stole third and scored on that overthrow.

Hecht, Bushur and Williams all had singles. St. Anthony is now 1-1.

At Moweaqua

Neoga captured a doubleheader over Moweaqua Central A&M Saturday. In the opener, the Indians won 6-3.

Tyler Romack picked up the pitching win going five innings, allowing one hit and striking out 13. Zach Miller had a single and a home run.

In the second contest, Neoga was a 5-1 winner. Riley Walk had two singles to lead Neoga. Guy Walk pitched the complete game. Neoga is now 2-0 on the season.

At Salem

Teutopolis downed Salem in a doubleheader Saturday. The Wooden Shoes claimed the opener 11-0.

T-town took the 1-0 early lead then tacked on three runs in the third and two in each of the next three innings. Ruholl picked up the one-hit pitching win with two strikeouts. Wenthe had a double and a home run. Goldstein and Pruemer added a single, double and two RBI each.

In the second contest, T-town was a 14-1 winner in six innings via the 10-run rule. The Shoes banged out 10 hits in the game led by Wenthe with a single, double and two RBI and Borries with a double and two RBI. Wenthe picked up the pitching win allowing three hits while striking out nine.

North Clay (Louisville) edged Olney 1-0. The winning run came in the top of the seventh inning. Cox was the winning pitcher on a two-hitter with four strikeouts.

Dylan Walker had a double and drove in a run while Lawson Britton added a double. The game was the season opener for the Cardinals.

At Windsor

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg claimed a doubleheader over Martinsville.

Windsor/Stew-Stras won the opener 21-0 in five innings. The winners stepped out to a 9-0 first inning lead then had a seven-run second and a six-run fourth. The Blue Devils had 16 hits in the contest led by Allen with four hits and five RBI, Theis with four hits and five RBI and Fulk with two hits and four RBI. Mark Jones pitched a no-hitter with no walks and seven strikeouts.

In the second game, Windsor/Stew-Stras won 11-0 in five innings. Ben Helton was the winning pitcher going four innings allowing two hits and striking out five. Ohnesorge and Kramer had a hit and two RBI each.

Pana came calling and edged Newton 8-7. Pana trailed the Eagles 4-1 after the opening inning and 5-1 after three. But the Panthers came back with two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the seventh to pull out the victory.

Newton was led by Chesnut with two hits and two RBI and Reis with a hit and two RBI.
