Indians, Cougars, Cardinals, Shoes Win Regional Crowns

Altamont players celebrated with fans after beating St. Anthony for the regional championship.

Altamont High School edged Effingham St. Anthony, 6-5 to win the Class 1A St. Anthony Baseball Regional Saturday.

The Indians tallied a run in the fourth inning and St. Anthony tied in the fifth. Altamont moved ahead 2-1 in the top of the sixth but here came the Bulldogs again with a four-run inning to lead 5-2.

Altamont then came back with a four-run top of the seventh and kept the Bulldogs from scoring again for a 6-5 victory.

Altamont had 10 hits led by Alek Biggs with a home run and two RBI, Noah Teasley with two singles and two RBI, Jacob Hammer with two singles and an RBI and Jacob Robbins with a double and an RBI.

Biggs started the game on the mound, going five innings, allowing five runs on four hits, one walk and eight strikeouts. Teasley came on to finish out the final two innings, allowing one hit and one walk for the victory.

Bryson Wall had a triple for the Bulldogs while Blake Niebrugge had a double and two RBI. Davis Tingley added two RBI.

The Indians advance to the Dieterich Sectional where they will face National Trail Conference opponent South Central at 4 p.m. Wednesday. South Central edged Dieterich 3-2 to win the Oblong Regional Saturday.

South Central won the championship of the Class 1A Oblong Regional Saturday.

Class 1A Oblong Regional

South Central edged Dieterich, 3-2 to win the Oblong Regional Saturday.

The Cougars took a 1-0 opening inning lead and had a two-run second. That's all the runs they would score.

Dieterich tallied one in the third and one in the sixth. behind four hits.

South Central had only one hit but the Movin' Maroons committed three errors. The lone hit came from Chase Dobson with a single and an RBI.

Dieterich was led by Evan Bohnhoff, Dalton Will, Matthew Hunzinger and Lucas Hall with a single each. Hunzinger and Hall had an RBI each.

Cole Niebrugge was the tough-luck loser on the mound, going all six innings, allowing one hit, three runs, five walks and seven strikeouts.

Dodson claimed the win, going seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits, three walks and 14 strikeouts.

South Central advances to the Dieterich Sectional to face Altamont Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Class 1A Nokomis Regional

Nokomis blanked Cumberland, 3-0 in action Saturday. The three runs didn't come until the top of the last inning.

Cumberland committed four errors as Nokomis tallied three runs, all unearned.

Nokomis had three hits while Cumberland had two, singles by Brennyn Cutts and Ross Hemmen.

Cutts went all seven innings on the hill, allowing the three runs on three hits, four walks and striking out 10.

The Pirates saw their season come to a close with a 23-4 record. The 23 wins set a new single-season school record.

Class 1A Nokomis Regional

Class 1A North Clay (Louisville) Regional

North Clay handily captured its own regional championship Saturday.

The Cardinals trounced Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran, 16-1.

North Clay advances to the Dieterich Sectional where it will take on Nokomis at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Nokomis won its own regional with a 3-0 victory over Cumberland.

 

Class 2A Greenville Regional

Teutopolis handled host Greenville to the tune of 11-1 in five innings via the 10-run rule to claim the Greenville Regional crown Saturday.

Neither team scored until the fourth when Greenville moved ahead 1-0 in the top of the frame. But T-town came back with a five-run bottom of the inning and scored six more in the fifth.

Dawson Smith went the distance allowing one run on two hits, no walks and striking out seven.

The Shoes had 10 hits led by Mitch Hemmen with a single, home run and four RBI, Mitch Hardiek with a single, double and three RBI, Trenton Schwerdt with a single, double and an RBI and Luke Ungrund with a single, triple and two RBI.

The Shoes are now 23-8-1 on the season and will face Gillespie at 4 p.m. Wednesday in its own regional. The second game features Robinson against Breese Mater Dei at 7. The winners advance to the Saturday championship game at 10 a.m.

Gillespie won the Staunton Regional with a big-scoring 19-12 win over Alton Marquette. Robinson claimed the Newton Regional with a 9-4 victory over Newton. Breese Mater Dei was an equally big winner, outscoring Belleville Althoff, 17-6 for the BMD Regional crown.
