EHS Falls To Mattoon, Area Baseball Roundup

Mattoon High School broke a scoreless tie with a two-run fifth and handed Effingham a 2-0 Apollo Conference loss Saturday in the opening game of a doubleheader. The second game was suspended due to rain in the top of the fifth with the Hearts ahead 4-2 and the bases loaded with no outs.

Both teams had three hits in the opener. EHS was led by Tanner Gordon, Cooper Jackson and Parker Wolfe with a single each.

Zach Lee went 4.1 innings, allowing no runs on two hits, one walk and seven strikeouts. He suffered the loss.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis stepped out to a 3-0 first inning lead and had a three-run second for the only scoring in a 6-0 win over Williamsville Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes had five hits, all singles by Dawson Smith, Luke Ungrund, Clint  Weber, Mtich Hardiek and Mitch Hemmen with a single each. Hardiek drove in two runs while Weber had one RBI. Tyler Runde contributed an RBI.

Smith was the winning pitcher, going six innings, allowing two hits, one walk and striking out 10. Trenton Schwerdt came on to throw the final inning with two strikeouts.

T-town improved to 20-8 on the season.

At Dieterich

Dieterich edged South Central, 3-2 in competition Friday.

The two teams were knotted at 1-1 in the fourth inning and the Cougars moved ahead 2-1 in the fifth. The Movin' Maroons then scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the victory. Lucas Hill hit a walkoff single for the win.

Hall finished with two singles and an RBI while Cole Niebrugge had a single and drove in a run. Austin Ruholl added an RBI.

South Central was led by Sebastin Cowger with a double and Hunter Brandt with three singles.

Neoga held a 2-0 lead through two innings and led 2-1 until the fifth. Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg then came to life with four runs and tacked on a final run in the sixth for a 6-2 victory Friday.

WSS tallied six hits led by Beau Bennett with three singles and two RBI and Gavan Wernsing with a single and three RBI.

Neoga was led by Chase Lanham, Chase Banning and Adam Fearday with a single each. Lanham had two RBI.

Cumberland's Brennyn Cutts threw a four-hitter with four walks and 18 strikeouts as the Pirates defeated Villa Grove, 14-4 Friday.

The game started April 30 with a rain delay. Was then picked up May 4 and suffered another rain delay and was finally finished Friday.

Cutts aided his own cause with three singles and two RBI while Ross Hemmen added three singles, Justin Brown two singles and two RBI, Reid Mathenia two singles and an RBI and Michael Flier with two singles.

In a Saturday contest, Cumberland downed Heyworth, 7-1.

The Pirates had two-run innings in the first and second and three in the fifth.

Cutts had three singles and an RBI while Flier had two singles and Brown drove in two runs with a single.

Brayson Shew threw the one-hitter for the win allowing one run, one walk and striking out five. Alex Talley came on to throw the final inning, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out two.

Ramsey took a 2-1 lead in the third inning and tacked on another run for a 3-1 win over Brownstown/St. Elmo Friday.

Both teams had five hits while BSE committed three errors.

Nate Philpot led BSE with two singles, a double and an RBI and Bryton Pruett a double. BSE drops to 14-10.

The Rams took a 4-1 opening inning lead and had an eight-run third.

Noah Teasley had the lone hit for the Indians with a single.
