EHS, Dieterich, C'land, Newton Nab Baseball Wins

Effingham High School picked up a victory over Flora in baseball action Friday.

The Hearts won 8-1. EHS took a 4-0 second inning lead and tacked on three in the third and one in the seventh.

The Hearts had nine hits led by Cooper Jackson and Brayton Poland with a single and double each and Zach Lee with a single, double and two RBI.

Carson Utz picked up the pitching win, coming on in relief and going 3.1 innings, allowing six hits, one run, two walks and striking out six. EHS is now 16-4 on the season.

At Altamont

Dieterich edged Altamont, 3-2 in baseball action Friday.

The Movin' Maroons scored all three runs in the fourth inning. Altamont's two came in the bottom of the seventh.

Dieterich had one less hit than Altamont with four. Matthew Hunzinger led the way with a double and two RBI.

Altamont was led by Dakota Kuhlman with two singles.

Hunzinger also was the winning pitcher on a three-hitter with four walks and 12 strikeouts.

Newton stepped out to a 4-0 first inning lead and went on to beat Lawrenceville, 9-3 in action Friday.

Both teams had six hits each. The Eagles had five extra base hits led by Connor Bierman with a home run and two RBI, Kyle Schafer with two doubles and four RBI, Ross Farley with two doubles and four RBI and Zach Stark with a double and an RBI.

Chase Galloway threw a six-hitter with three walks and five strikeouts.

At Newton

At Sullivan

Cumberland took a 2-0 lead in the third inning then tacked on two in the fifth and one in the sixth for a 5-2 win over Sullivan Friday.

The Pirates had seven hits led by Ryan Mathenia with two doubles and Brayson Shew with three singles and two RBI.

Alex Talley threw a three-hitter with no walks and eight strikeouts.

At Edwardsville

Teutopolis had a tough weekend dropping three losses, one against Edwardsville on Friday and two Saturday against Chatham Glenwood and Highland.

In Friday play, Edwardsville scored the lone run of the contest in the first inning for the 1-0 victory.

T-town had only one hit, a single by Trenton Schwerdt. Two Edwardsville pitchers combined with D. Taylor picked up the one-hit win allowing no walks and striking out six. C. Salter came on to go three innings, allowing no hits, one walk and striking out 13.

T-town's Dawson Smith allowed three hits, three walks and struck out seven in the loss.

In action Saturday, Teutopolis dropped a 10-1 decision to Chatham Glenwood. Glenwood (15-5) took a 3-0 second inning lead and that was the game. T-town scored its lone run in the fifth.

The Shoes had four hits led by Justin Hardiek with two singles.

T-town then fell to Highland, 5-0. Highland edged out to a 1-0 first inning lead, tacked on a single run in the third and fifth innings and finished with two in the seventh.

Schwerdt went six innings allowing four hits, five runs, three walks and striking out eight in the tough-luck loss.

T-town had only two hits, singles by Schwerdt and Clint Weber.

Odin came calling and claimed a 4-2 win over South Central Friday.

South Central took a 1-0 first inning lead and led 2-1 after two. Odin then came back in the sixth with three runs for the victory.

The Cougars had only three hits, two singles by Sam Rubin and a single and an RBI from Logan Lotz.
