PHOENIX -- With an 12-hit contest, the Chicago Cubs downed the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-1 in Major League Baseball action Tuesday.

The Cubs stepped out to a 2-0 first inning lead, had a three-run second and a four-run fifth. Daniel Murphy had a single and drove in two runs on a homer while Javier Baez also hit a single and had a two-run shot.

Mike Montomgery went six innings, allowing four hits, one run, one walk and striking out eight.

Anthony Rizzo wore out the Diamondbacks pitcher with a 17-pitch effort. He went 0-2 before he fouled off four pitches, took two, then fouled off six more. On the 17th pitch, he lined out.

The Chicago Cubs say closer Brandon Morrow is done for the season. Morrow hasn’t pitched since July 15 due to a bone bruise, but the team had hoped to have him back for the playoffs.

Cardinals 8, Braves 1

ATLANTA -- It took a while before the St. Louis Cardinals finally got untracked Tuesday to beat the Atlanta Braves 8-1.

The Braves held a 1-0 lead until the fourth inning when Paul DeJong nailed a two-run shot out of the park and the Cardinals never looked back.

Jose Martinez had a double as did Tyler O'Neill. Kolton Wong chipped in with two singles.

Austin Gomber improved to 6-1 as he went five innings, allowing one run, three walks and striking out five.

The Cardinals pulled back within two of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Orioles Lose 108th Game

The Baltimore Orioles lost their 108th game of the season Tuesday night. That’s the most they’ve ever lost as the Orioles, although when they were the St. Louis Browns, they lost 111 games during the 1939 season. Should the Orioles lose four of their last 11 games, which seems likely, they’ll set a new franchise mark.
