ST. LOUIS -- Matt Carpenter hit his 22nd career leadoff home  to go past Lou Brock for most leadoff homers in franchise history but the Rockies tallied a 6-3 victory Tuesday at Busch Stadium. The homer was the seventh leadoff homer for Carpenter this season which set another franchise record.

The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead on Carpenter's homer and held that until the fifth when the Rockies came to life, scoring two runs. Colorado tacked on another two runs in the sixth and finished out with two in the seventh. The Cardinals attempted a rally in the eighth that produced two runs but that was all the closer they could come.

Jack Flaherty attempted to keep the lead for the Cardinals and went into the fifth where he walked Ryan McMahon after a battle at the plate that produced 12 pitches. Charlie Blackmon then knocked out a home run, giving the Rockies the lead.

Pirates 5, Cubs 4

The series went even at 5-5 as the Pittsburgh Pirates downed the Chicago Cubs, 5-4 Tuesday.

David Freese had two RBI doubles that included one in the fifth that broke a 3-3 tie. Francisco Cervelli and Gregory Polanco had a home run each that produced the other two runs for the Pirates victory.

Javier Baez was on fire, with two singles and a three-run homer, his 22nd of the season, but couldn't get the Cubs the victory. Baez now has a league-leading 82 RBI.

Jon Lester can't seem to get a handle on the Pirates. He put down the first two batters in the third then allowed three straight hits including a double by Freese and a two-run homer by Cervelli.

Addison Russell had an RBI double in the ninth for the Cubs and attempted to take third. He was called safe but the call was reviewed and overturned.

Newly acquired New York Yankees pitcher J.A. Happ has been diagnosed with a mild case of hand, foot and mouth disease. It’s not yet known if Happ will miss any starts, but Mets starter Noah Syndergaard was put on the 10-day disabled list after recently contracting the same disease.

Nationals Demolish Mets

The Washington Nationals demolished the New York Mets last night 25-4. Amazingly, despite all of their historically futile seasons, it was the worst defeat in Mets history.
