TEUTOPOLIS -- Effingham Junior American Legion Post 120 advanced from the opening evening of the Junior Legion District Baseball Tournament Thursday.

Effingham Post 120 downed Newton Orange, 9-1. Post 120 took a 1-0 lead as Cameron Kalber doubled and scored on a wild pitch. Kyle Pemberton then brought Davis Tingley home with a single and Ben Thompson had a ground out that scored Kolin Waymoth for a 3-0 lead.

Newton Orange came back in the fourth when Ross Farley reached on an error and William Geier drove him over to third with a single. Jarrett Tharp then had a ground out and Farley scored.

Effingham came back with another single by Pemberton. Pemberton advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Thompson. Two straight walks and a hit batsman gave Effingham a 4-1 lead. A pickoff attempt that went astray, a wild pitch and a ground out by Tingley pushed the score to 7-1. Waymoth followed with a double that scored Kalber and Hoene and that's where the scoring ended at 9-1.

In the opening contest, Odin downed Newton Blue, no score was listed.

Effingham Post 120 advances to a noon contest Saturday against either Odin or Teutopolis. That contest will be held today at 5:30 p.m. followed by Newton Orange against Newton Blue at 7:30.
