SAN FRANCISCO -- Despite three home runs, the Chicago Cubs couldn't get the hit when it counted in dropping a 5-4 loss to San Francisco in 13 innings Wednesday at AT&T Park.

Jason Heyward and Javier Baez hit solo shots while Kris Bryant had a two-run blow that highlighted the Cubs 11 hits. But the Cubs were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded 14 on base. Along with that came 16 strikeouts.

Mike Montgomery kept the Cubs in the game allowing four runs before he pitched four scoreless innings.

The loss snapped the Cubs' three-series win streak and dropped them to two games back of the Brewers in the National League Central.

White Sox 4, Cardinals 0

CHICAGO -- St. Louis got out of Chicago with a two-game split but the Cardinals dropped a 4-0 loss Wednesday to the White Sox.

The road trip lost the Cardinals some ground in the National League Central. Although they didn't lose any of the series against Arizona, San Francisco and Chicago, they still dropped back in the standings.

White Sox starter Carlos Rodon went 7 1/3 scoreless innings while Luke Weaver picked up his eighth loss.

The Cardinals had a rally in the eighth, loading the bases with one out, but Tommy Pham and Jose Martinez struck out to end that rally.

Meanwhile, Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas has been scratched from the NL roster because he’s scheduled to start on Sunday. Mikolas will be replaced by the Dodgers’ Ross Stripling.

Field Set For Home Run Derby

The field is set for baseball’s Home Run Derby. The National League dominates with seven of the eight players, with the only AL representative being the Astros’ Alex Bregman. He’ll compete against the Brewers’ Jesus Aguilar, Bryce Harper of the host Washington Nationals, the Phillies’ Rhys Hoskins, Freddie Freeman of the Braves, Max Muncy of the Dodgers and Cubs teammates Javier Baez and Kyle Schwarber.

Astros Send Giles to Minors

The Houston Astros have sent closer Ken Giles to the minors following a blown save and a meltdown against Oakland on Tuesday. Giles apparently used an expletive when Manager A.J. Hinch came out to replace him.

Tebow Appears in Double-A All-Star Game

Tim Tebow appeared in last night’s Double-A All-Star game. While many questioned his credentials, Tebow hit an opposite-field double in his first at-bat. However, Tebow grounded out, flied out and struck out in his other at bats and the game ended in a 4-4 tie.
