Effingham Will Face Mattoon in 3A Charleston Baseball Regional

CHARLESTON -- Mattoon High School edged Paris 2-1 to advance to the championship game of the Class 1A Charleston Baseball Regional Thursday.

The Green Wave took a 1-0 lead in the second inning before Paris tied in the top of the sixth. Mattoon's Branson hit a solo homer in the bottom of the frame and the Green Wave finished with the win.

Spitz was the winning pitcher on a one-hitter over 6 2/3 innings with Nichols picking up the save as he struck out the final batter.

Effingham is the opponent Mattoon will now face Saturday for the regional championship at 10 a.m. These two teams have met in the Apollo Conference this season and split with the Hearts winning 15-13 and the Green Wave 12-3.

Class 1A St. Anthony Sectional championship -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg vs. Cumberland, 11 a.m.

Class 3A Charleston Regional championship -- Effingham vs. Charleston, 11 a.m.
