Tony Kreke has been named the varsity baseball coach at St. Anthony High School.

The move was made after Kenny Koenig's contract as coach was not renewed.

Kreke is a current high school teacher and served as varsity baseball coach at Ramsey before moving to St. Anthony. In addition to teaching at St. Anthony since 2014, Kreke has been head junior high baseball coach, frosh/soph boys baseball coach, and frosh/soph girls basketball coach. He is also sponsor for St. Anthony's Catholic Athletes in Christ. The Teutopolis native also worked in the Effingham High School baseball program prior to heading to Ramsey.

Koenig said he had been hearing rumors that the school was going to make a change. He contacted Athletic Director Kevin Palmer as to his status and in a meeting with Palmer and St. Anthony High School Principal Greg Fearday on Monday was told that the school "was going in a different direction" and Koenig's contract would not be renewed.

Koenig said as to his future coaching plans, "We'll see what happens and go from there. I'm gonna enjoy summer with my kids." He said that if the opportunity presented itself for another coaching job and it was a good fit, he'd be interested.

A statement announcing Kreke's appointment from the St. Anthony Administration thanked Koenig for the time he has given and the successes of the program.

As for Kreke, he said in the statement announcing the change, "Today, I am honored and humbled to become the new head baseball coach at St. Anthony High School. I want to thank my wife, Emily, who has always shown her love and support for me to pursue my passion. We currently have great momentum in our baseball program. The talent and the work ethic that these players possess are truly remarkable and I can't wait to get started. St. Anthony has great pride for their sports programs and I've very honored to be a part of this great tradition."
