ST. LOUIS -- Miles Mikolas threw a four-hit shutout as the St. Louis Cardinals blanked the Kansas City Royals, 6-0 Monday at Busch Stadium.

Mikolas, who spent three seasons in Japan, threw 109 pitches and is now 6-0 in his nine starts. He struck out nine and walked just one in the ninth. He gave up back-to-back singles in the first inning but put 22 of 26 down after that. He now has a 2.24 ERA.

Tyler O'Neill came through offensively for the Cardinals. He homered for the third consecutive game to improve the Cardinals score to 4-0. He then added a run-scoring double in the fifth.

Matt Carpenter hit a solo shot in the eighth to give the Cardinals a 6-0 lead. Carpenter is now 13 for 24 with seven doubles in the last six games.

Already without starting shortstop Paul DeJong for at least several weeks, the Cardinals lost another player in Greg Garcia, who exited with lower back tightness after he singled in the sixth. He is considered day to day.
