EKU Sweeps Eastern Illinois in Baseball

Richmond, Ky. -- Eastern Kentucky was able to hold off a late comeback from the Panthers to secure the sweep. EKU secured the series sweep defeating the Panthers, 5-4 on Sunday.

With the loss Eastern Illinois drops to 13-25 (4-14 OVC), while Eastern Kentucky advances to 21-20 (12-6 OVC).

Jack Wolfe earned the start on the hill to close out the series for the Panthers in Sunday’s game. Wolfe tossed 3.2 innings, with six hits, five runs, four strikeouts, and two walks. Wolfe suffered the loss, dropping to 1-2 on the season.

Michael Starcevich pitched 4.1 innings of relief for the Panthers allowing one hit, one walk and struck out one batter.

EKU got out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first inning when Alex Holderbach hit a two run single to left field. Eastern Kentucky added two their lead in the bottom of the second inning scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Daniel McFarland.

The Panthers were able to get on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Eastern Illinois would draw back-to-back walks with one out. Jimmy govern was able to drive in a run home with a single to right field. Josh Turnock would drive in the second run of the inning hitting into a fielders choice.

Eastern Kentucky answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring two runs. Cornell Nixon gave EKU the lead hitting a sacrifice fly to left field to score Chris Botsoe. Daniel Harris IV would score the second run of the game on a wild pitch.

Govern would earn his third RBI of the game in the top of the sixth blasting a two run homer to right center to cut the lead down to 5-4.

Aaron Ochsenbein would earn his seventh save of the season for EKU. Ochsenbein tossed 2.0 innings of relief allowing one hit and striking out three batters.

The Panthers will return home April 24 to host Saint Louis University in a non-conference afternoon matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
