MATTOON -- Effingham Post 120 and Teutopolis Post 924 participated in the Mattoon Firecracker Senior Legion Tournament during the weekend.

Effingham and Teutopolis squared off in a quarterfinal game. Teutopolis, the No. 1 seed and Effingham, the No. 8 seed, battled for 14 innings before Post 120 scored a run in the top of the 14th to earn the 2-1 victory.

Lane Koenig gave up one unearned run in the first seven innings while Bryce Lohman pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory. Joe Kabbes recorded the final two outs in the bottom of the 14th.

Eric Kremer and Lee Hardiek were equally impressive on the mound giving up only two runs over 14 innings.

Offensively, Brett Koester scored the winning run and contributed two singles and an RBI double. Cody Grove and Colin Koester added two singles each.

Eric Kremer and Drew Thoele had two singles each. Kremer added an RBI for Post 924.

T-town scored a run in the fourth when Lee Hardiek reached base on an error and came home on a single by Eric Kremer.

Effingham came back in the fifth to tie the game when Brett Koester doubled home a run. Post 120 tallied the winning run when Koester drew a walk then stole second. Austin Kline struck out but the dropped strike had to be thrown to first getting Kline out while Koester took third. Then a wild pitch brought Koester home for the game-winner.

Unfortunately, the 14 inning affair took it's toll on Post 120 who fell 8-2 to Lincoln Post 263 in the semifinal game.

Lincoln tallied five runs in the opening inning and scored another run in the second. Effingham couldn't get untracked until the seventh, bringing home two runs only to fall short 8-2.

Mattoon Post 88 claimed the championship of the tournament by defeating Lincoln in the title contest.
