WSS, South Central, Newton Advance To Championship Games

ALTAMONT -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School advanced to the championship game of the Class 1A Altamont Baseball Regional by edging host Altamont 6-5 Thursday.

Altamont held a 3-1 lead in the second inning and pushed that to 5-1 in the third. The Hatchets tallied a run in the fourth then scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out the win.

Beau Bennett had a single, double and drove in three runs for the Hatchets. Derek Moshenrose had a single and double while Chase Thies added a double and an RBI. Dalton Armes had a single and drove in two runs.

Altamont was led by Wyatt Vaughn with a single, double and an RBI and Jacob Finn with a double and two RBI.

Josh Overbeck came on in the final inning allowing no hits, no walks and two strikeouts to secure the pitching win.

Windsor/Stew-Stras advances to the title game against Effingham St. Anthony at 11 a.m. Saturday.

At Centralia

South Central took the early lead and never looked back in a 10-2 win over Webber Township (Bluford) in the Class 1A Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran Regional Thursday.

The Cougars took a 4-0 first inning lead and led 7-0 before Webber tallied two runs in the top of the sixth. South Central finished off with two in the bottom of that inning.

The Cougars had only six hits but four were doubles. Davis had a double and three RBI while Geiler had a double and two RBI, Brandt a double and an RBI and Markley a double.

Matheny was the winning pitcher going 2.2 innings, allowing one hit, two walks and striking out three. Brandt went 3.1 innings allowing two hits, two runs, two walks and striking out four. Geiler came on in the final inning, allowing one hit.

South Central advances to face North Clay (Louisville) at 10 a.m. Saturday for the regional championship.

At Oblong

Oblong ended Cumberland's season with a 5-3 victory Thursday in the Class 1A Oblong Regional.

The Pirates held a 1-0 lead in the top of the third but Oblong came roaring back in the bottom of the frame with five runs. The Pirates tallied two more in the sixth but fell short.

Alex Talley had two singles and an RBI for the Pirates while Riley Brown had two singles and two RBI. The Pirates end the season with a 14-15 record.

Oblong advances to the championship game Saturday at 11 a.m. against Dieterich.

At Flora

In the Class 2A Flora Regional, Newton edged Flora 5-4 to advance to the championship game Saturday.

The Eagles tallied four runs in the third inning. Flora pulled within 4-3 in the fourth. The Eagles added on a run in the top of the seventh and the Wolves came back with a run in the bottom of the frame only to fall short.

John Grunloh was the winning pitcher, going four innings, allowing four hits and striking out three.

Bierman had a single and an RBI while Jansen had a single, double and two RBI. Grunloh added an RBI.

The Eagles will now face Breese Central at 11 a.m. Saturday in the title contest.

At Greenville

Vandalia blanked Greenville 6-0 in the Class 2A Greenville Regional Thursday.

The  Vandals tallied single runs in the first and third and two runs in the sixth and seventh. Vandalia had 12 hits while Richie Well threw a two-hitter with five striikeouts.

The Vandals improve to 23-6 and will now face Teutopolis at 11 a.m. Saturday for the regional championship.
