Neoga, Cumberland Win Regional Openers

NEOGA -- Neoga exploded for 15 runs and had 16 hits in an opening round Class 1A Altamont Regional baseball win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Monday.

The Indians edged out to a 2-1 first inning lead then tallied eight in the second and five in the third.

Caleb Hill and Ross Moran had a single, home run and three RBI each while Justin Yurs had a single, home run and two RBI. Clayton Butler had a single and double while Jimmy Wood had two singles and an RBI, Evan Fritcher two singles and three RBI and Layne Andrews two singles and two RBI.

Grove led CHBC with the lone hit, a solo home run.

Fritcher was the winning pitcher, going two innings, allowing one hit, one run, no walks and striking out four. Wood came on in the third throwing a no-hitter, allowing no walks and striking out four.

Neoga (8-14) will next meet Effingham St. Anthony Wednesday at 4 p.m.

At Greenup

Cumberland opened the Class 1A Oblong Regional with a 9-1 win over Martinsville Monday.

The Pirates stepped out to a quick 4-0 first inning lead, then tallied two in the fourth and three in the sixth.

The Pirates' Grissom had two singles and drove in three runs. Talley had two singles and an RBI while Mathenia added two singles and an RBI. Mitchell had a single, double and two RBI.

The Pirates evened their record to 14-14 and will now face Oblong in second round play at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Palestine/Hutsonville won the opener over Kansas Co-op 8-2 and will now face Dieterich at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

At Greenup

At Brownstown

Woodlawn ended Brownstown/St. Elmo's season with a 5-3 victory in the Class 1A Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran Regional.

The two teams were tied at 1-1 in the first inning. BSE took a 2-1 lead in the second but Woodlawn regained the lead with a two-run third. BSE tied in the fourth. Once again Woodlawn came back in the next inning with two runs for the victory.

Nate Philpot led BSE with two singles and two RBI. BSE ends the season with a 9-13-1 record.

In the second contest, Webber Township (Bluford) bounced Centralia CORL 11-0.

Breese Mater Dei bounced Carlyle 13-3 in the opening game of the Class 2A Greenville Regional.

Mater Dei will now face Teutopolis at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

 

At Robinson

Robinson blanked Lawrenceville 3-0 in the opening round game of the Class 2A Flora Regional.

The Maroons will now face Breese Central at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
