EHS Splits Apollo DH, St. A Beats Marshall, Area Baseball Roundup

Effingham High School split an Apollo Conference baseball doubleheader against Mount Zion Saturday.

The Hearts fell in the opening game 13-1 in six innings. EHS took a 1-0 lead in the second inning but the Braves tallied six in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the sixth.

The Hearts had three hits, all singles by Koenig, Bateman and Lohman.

In the second game, EHS came back to take a 3-2 win over Mount Zion. EHS tallied single runs in the first, second and fifth for a 3-0 lead. The Braves tallied one in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Beals had two doubles and an RBI while Sandifer added a double for the Hearts. Lee was the winning pitcher on a three-hitter, allowing one run, five walks and striking out three.

EHS is now 5-1 in the conference.

effingham won a junior varsity game over Mount Zion 1-0 in 12 innings. The Hearts tallied the winning run in the bottom of the 12th when Kalber had a walkoff hit scoring Gordon with the winning run.

Jackson had a single and double for the Herats while Kalber had two singles and an RBI and Shackelford three singles.

At St. Anthony

St. Anthony grabbed an early lead on its way to a 4-2 victory over Marshall Saturday.

The Bulldogs tallied on a home run by Bryar Jansen and a walk in the first inning.

Jacob Guy earned the win, going 6 1/3 innings, giving up two runs and six hits. Gavin Braunecker recorded the last two outs for the save.

Adam Levitt and Jansen each drove in a run for the Bulldogs.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis captured two victories Saturday, hosting Nashville and Greenville.

The Wooden Shoes beat Nashville 12-2 in six innings. T-town held a 4-2 lead until the sixth then ended the game with eight runs.

Belleville had a single, double and drove in three runs while Goeckner had a single and two RBI. Kremer was the winning pitcher, going four innings, allowing one run on one hit, three walks and striking out eight.

In the second game, T-town tallied a 2-0 win over Breese Central. The Shoes scored both runs in the second inning.

Hartke had two singles, Bueker a double and Kremer a single and an RBI. Belleville moved his pitching record to 3-0 allowing two hits, one walk and striking out four.

T-town is now 13-6 on the season.

At Greenville

North Clay (Louisville) fell to Greenville 9-5. The Cardinals took a 3-1 lead in the third inning but Greenville came back with three runs to move ahead 4-3. North Clay regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth but Greenville came right back with four in the bottom of the frame.

VanDyke had a double and drove in two runs while Burkett had a single and two RBI and Aldrich a double and an RBI.

In another contest at Greenville, North Clay beat Carlyle 7-3. Carlyle held a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth when the Cardinals tallied five runs to pull out a 7-3 victory.

Jones had two singles and an RBI, Aldrich a double and two RBI, Blank two singles and Repking a single and two RBI.

Neoga edged Flora 7-6 in action Saturday.

The score was tied at 2-2 after three innings. Flora took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth but Neoga came back with four runs in the bottom of the frame then held off the Wolves in the final inning.

Hill had two singles and drove in two runs for Neoga while Moran had two singles and Ramert had two singles.

Neoga improves to 4-10.

Friday's Games

Effingham St. Anthony won a back-and-forth contest over Centennial in action Friday, 13-12.

Centennial led 1-0 after the first inning before St. Anthony took a 2-1 lead in the second and held that until the fourth when the Bulldogs tacked on two more and led 8-7 in the fifth. Centennial tied in the sixth. St. Anthony pushed across five runs in the seventh then had to hold off Centennial which finished with four in the bottom of the seventh.

The Bulldogs had 12 hits, including four doubles. Joseph Kabbes had a single, double and two RBI while Drew Gibson added two singles. Bryson Wall had double and two RBI and Greg Utz a double and an RBI. Jacob Guy chipped in with two singles and two RBI while Blake Niebrugge had two singles and an RBI.

Effingham pounded Casey-Westfield 10-1 in action at Paul Smith Field Friday.

The Warriors held a 1-0 lead until the third when the Hearts tallied three runs then took a 6-0 lead in the fourth and an 8-0 lead in the fifth. EHS finished with two more in the sixth.

Sherrod had two singles for the Hearts while Beals, Koester and Seachrist had a double each. Koester had two RBI and Beals and Seachrist one each. Sandifer had a triple and two RBI.

Brownstown/St. Elmo pounded out 10 hits and ended the game in the fifth over Mulberry Grove 15-3.

Isaac Maxey and Lewis Brown had a single and a double each. Maxey drove in three runs while Brown had two RBI. Nate Philpot contributed a double and an RBI while Wade Ireland had two singles and an RBI.

SEB pushed its record to 7-10.

Mount Zion handed Teutopolis an 11-6 loss in action Friday.

The Wooden Shoes held a 4-2 lead after the first inning but Mount Zion had three-run third, fourth and sixth innings.

T-town had nine hits led by Belleville with three singles and an RBI, Bueker with a single, double and an RBI and Goeckner with two singles.

T-town dropped to 11-6 on the season while Mount Zion improved to 14-4.

Dieterich tallied four runs in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and beat Neoga 5-1 in Friday play.

Charlie Thoele was the winning pitcher, throwing a four-hitter with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Dieterich had seven hits led by Goedde, C. Thoele, Schmidt and P. Thoele with a single each. Schmidt and Goedde drove in a run each.

Jimmy Wood led Neoga with two singles.

The Wolves took a 3-0 first inning lead. South Central pulled within 3-2 in the third and tied in the sixth.The Cougars then won with a run in the ninth.

Geiler had a single, double, home run and two RBI for the winners. Matheny had three singles. Harpster had a home run and an RBI while Davis had two singles and Brandt two singles.
