EHS Wins Apollo DH, Area Baseball Roundup

Effingham High School swept Mattoon in an Apollo Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday.

The Hearts won the opener 7-5. EHS took a 4-1 opening inning lead but the Green Wave came back with a four-run second to lead 5-4. The Hearts then tallied three more in the third for the victory.

The Hearts had four extra base hits in the game. Bateman had a single, triple and three RBI while Koenig had a double and two RBI and Koester and Beals a double each.

Lee claimed the pitching win in relief of Beals in the third. He allowed no hits, no runs, three walks and struck out six.

In the second game, the Hearts stepped out to a 4-0 first inning lead and held a 10-4 lead after three innings. Mattoon came back with a run in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh but the Hearts scored two more in the sixth.

The Green Wave outhit the Hearts 15-12 and had a home run and six doubles.

EHS was led by Sandifer with a single, home run and two RBI, Lee with two doubles and an RBI, Beals with two singles and two RBI, Koenig with two singles and an RBI, Hull with a double and two RBI and Koester with a double and an RBI.

Koenig picked up the pitching win, going five innings, allowing nine hits, five runs, one walk and striking out four.

The Hearts improve to a perfect 4-0 in the conference, 12-0 overall.

In a junior varsity game Friday against Teutopolis, the Hearts claimed an 8-3 victory. EHS held a 1-0 first inning lead and led 6-3 after five. The Hearts tacked on two more in the eighth.

Hagler had three singles for the Hearts. T-town was led by Will with a single and double and McMahon with two singles and an RBI.

Wayne City Round Robin

Brownstown/St. Elmo claimed two victories in the Wayne City Round Robin Saturday.

BSE edged Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 4-3 in the opening contest. BSE held a 3-0 lead until the fourth when CHBC scored a run. BSE came back with one in the fifth. CHBC scored its final two runs in the seventh.

Dalton Denton picked up the pitching win, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run, two hits, five walks and striking out 10.

Isaac Maxey, Lewis Brown and Denton had a double each. Denton added an RBI.

In the second contest, BSE stepped out to a 4-2 opening inning lead and never looked back in beating host Wayne City 13-6.

Both teams had 10 hits. BSE was led by Nate Philpot with three singles, a double and an RBI. Hunter Strauch had a double and two  RBI and Caleb Atwood two singles and four RBI.

BSE improved to 5-3.

 At Sullivan

Altamont traveled to Sullivan, trailed the Redskins until the sixth and broke loose for a 4-2 victory.

Sullivan held a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Altamont tallied one in the fifth then took a 3-2 lead in the sixth and tacked on a final run in the seventh.

Biggs had three singles for the Indians while Schmidt had two singles and two RBI and Whitt a double and an RBI.

C. Miller was the winning pitcher, going five innings, allowing four hits, two runs, two walks and striking out seven.

 At Kinmundy

Valmeyer finished with a 3-0 record to win the South Central Wooden Bat Tournament Friday and Saturday. North Clay (Louisville) finished second at 2-1, South Central third at 1-2 and Casey-Westfield 0-3.

In Friday action, North Clay pounded Casey-Westfield 16-1. The Cardinals edged out to a 1-0 first inning lead then had an 11-run second and never looked back.

Repking had a single, home run and four RBI while Burkett had a double and an RBI for the winners.

Valmeyer then defeated South Central 10-7. Valmeyer had a four-run second and a five-run third.

The Cougars had 13 hits led by Lotz with a single, double and two RBI, Blomberg with a single, double and an RBI, Markley with two singles and an RBI and Geiler with a double and two RBI.

In Saturday play, Souh Central beat Casey-Westfield 13-7. The score was tied at 5-5 after two innings before South Central took off with a four-run third and went on for the win.

Geiler had three singles and drove in a run for the winners while Brandt had two singles and two RBI.

In game four, Valmeyer blanked Casey-Westfield 10-0.

Valmeyer then defeated North Clay 11-6. Valmeyer took the early lead and never looked back.

North Clay was led by Aldrich with a home run and three RBI and Blank with a single, double and an RBI.

The Cardinals finished out by edging South Central 2-1. North Clay scored a single run in the first and second innings. South Central tallied its lone run in the third.

Aldrich led the winners with a single and double while Repking had two singles. South Central was led by Geiler with two singles.
