Effingham High  School scored all three of its runs in the first inning and went on to edge North Clay (Louisville) 3-2 in baseball action Thursday.

The Cardinals came back with two runs in the top of the second but that's all the scoring there was the rest of the way.

Five EHS pitchers combined to throw a four-hitter with nine walks and six strikeouts. Utz picked up the victory.

Koester led EHS in hitting with a single and double while Bateman had a double and drove in two runs. Jackson had a single and drove in the other run. The Hearts are now 10-0 on the season.

At Effingham

At Altamont

Altamont banged out nine hits and took a 10-2 win over Mulberry Grove Thursday.

Mulberry Grove took a 2-0 first inning lead but Altamont tied in the second and took a 4-2 lead in the fourth. The Indians then had a three-run fifth and a three-run sixth.

D. Miller had a single, double and an RBI while C. Miller had a double and an RBI for Altamont. Pemberton had a single, triple and two RBI.

Biggs picked up the pitching win, going five innings, allowing two runs on two hits, two walks and striking out seven.

Teutopolis High School pushed its record to 10-4 on the season by blanking Dieterich 6-0. The Wooden Shoes stepped out to the early 2-0 lead then added on three in the second and one in the fourth.

Lee Hardiek went all seven innings, allowing three hits, three walks and striking out three.

Jansen had a single, home run and five RBI while Bueker had a single and double. Belleville had two singles and an RBI.

Dieterich was led by McClain with two singles. The Movin' Maroons drop to 5-3.

At Teutopolis

Cumberland took the early lead and held on for a 9-6 win over Neoga Thursday.

The Pirates tallied four in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth. Neoga scored three in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Grissom had a single, home run and three RBI for the Pirates while Talley had two singles and an RBI, Kanizer a double and an RBI, Flier a double and Mitchell two singles and three RBI.

Neoga was led by Andrews with a single, double and two RBI and Fritcher with two singles.

At Greenup

Newton took a 1-0 lead in the third inning and went on to blank Marshall 4-0 in action Thursday.

The Eagles had only one hit, a double by Bierman with two RBI. Grunloh was the winning pitcher, going six innings, allowing two hits and striking out eight.
