MAHOMET -- Lane Koenig earned the win for Effingham as the Hearts defeated Mahomet-Seymour 4-1 in baseball action Thursday.

Koenig went five innings, allowing no runs, no hits and striking out five. Zach Lee recorded the last six outs to earn the save.

The Hearts took a 1-0 lead in the third then tacked on a run in the fourth and one in the sixth. Mahomet-Seymour scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth. The Hearts finished out with a run in the seventh.

Mason Hull had the lone extra base hit of the game with a double and drove in a run. Lee had two singles and an RBI.

Effingham won the junior varsity game 10-4.

At Cowden

Cumberland trailed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 3-0 after three innings then broke loose with five runs in the fourth, eight in the fifth and three more in the sixth for a 16-9 victory Thursday.

The Pirates had 16 hits in the game. Brown had a single, two doubles and an RBI while Mathenia had two singles, a double and two RBI. Mitchell added a single, double and four RBI, Talley a single, double and an RBI, Brown two singles and an RBI and Flier a double and two RBI.

CHBC was led by Lowry with a single, double and an RBI and Grove with a double and three RBI.

Newton took a 1-0 lead in the third inning then tacked on another run for a 2-0 victory over Altamont.

The Eagles had six hits led by Bierman with two singles and Jansen with a single and two RBI.

Altamont was led by Whitt and Robbins with two singles each.

Teutopolis tallied a 9-2 win over Casey-Westfield. The Wooden Shoes held a 4-0 first inning lead then had a three-run third and a two-run fourth.

Jansen had a single, home run and three RBI to lead the Shoes. Belleville chipped in with a single, double and an RBI and Bueker had a double and an RBI.

Mette picked up the pitching win, going four innings, allowing three hits, two runs, two walks and striking out seven.

Flora took the early lead at 2-0 in the first and led 3-2 after four innings. But Dieterich came back with a three-run fifth then finished off with a six-run seventh for an 11-4 victory.

Dieterich had 10 hits in the contest led by Thoele with a double, Flach with two singles and an RBI, Campton with two singles and two RBI, Bohnhoff with two singles and two RBI and P. Thoele with two singles and an RBI.

Schmidt picked up the pitching win, going two innings, allowing three hits, one run, one walk and striking out three.
