Teutopolis, North Clay Post Wins in Regional Championships

Teutopolis captured the Class 2A Effingham St. Anthony Regional championship.

Teutopolis High School claimed the championship of the Class 2A Effingham St. Anthony Regional by edging Breese Central 7-6 Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes edged out to a 1-0 first inning lead then added on another run in the third. Breese Central came back to take a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning and added to that lead in the top of the fifth with two runs.

But the Shoes tied the score in the bottom of the fifth when Kyle Smith doubled home two runs then pushed ahead 6-5 in the sixth when Austin Johnson singled home a run. Breese Central then tied in the top of the seventh.

Cody Jansen hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to bring home Kyle Smith for the game-winning run.

The Shoes had nine hits led by Bueker with two singles, a double and an RBI, Johnson with two singles and two RBI, K. Smith with a double and two RBI and Cody Jansen with two singles and two RBI.

Devin Smith was the winning pitcher on a nine-hitter with two walks and 10 strikeouts. He improved his record to 8-2-1.

T-town is now 24-9 on the season and will play Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in its own sectional.

 Class 1A Altamont Regional

North Clay (Louisville) edged host Altamont 1-0 to claim the championship of the Class 1A Altamont Regional Saturday.

The only run of the game came on a steal of home plate. Cole VanDyke reached first on a dropped third strike then moved to second on a balk. He took third on a passed ball and then stole home.

Collin Warren picked up the pitching win  on a five-hitter with six walks and 12 strikeouts. Caden Miller suffered the tough-luck loss, allowing three hits, two walks and striking out six. Altamont ended the season with a 15-7 record.

North Clay advances to its own sectional where it will take on Oblong at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. In the opening game Wednesday, South Central faces Edwards County (Albion) at 4:30 p.m.

Class 1A South Central Regional

Neoga broke a 2-2 opening inning tie with a four-run second and led 7-5 after four innings. But South Central started to peck away with three runs in the sixth to tie the score then had a five-run fifth to pull out a 13-8 win for the regional championship.

The Cougars were outhit by Neoga 11-8  but the Indians had four errors. Geiler had two singles and drove in two runs for South Central while Harmeier had a double.

Neoga was led by Matt Kingery with a home run and three RBI, Caleb Hill with a single and double and Drew Ramert with three singles. The Indians end the season with a 17-11 record.

Class 1A Decatur St. Teresa Regional

Bethany Okaw Valley ended Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg's season by blanking the Hatchets 10-0 in the St. Teresa Regional championship game Saturday.

The Timberwolves took a 4-0 first inning lead and ended the game in the fifth with six runs.

WSS had three hits in the game led by Nic Hutchinson with a double and triple. Owen Bridges added a single.

Okaw Valley advances to the Danville Sectional Thursday and will face Crete Illinois Lutheran at 5 p.m.

Class 2A Newton Regional

Newton claimed the championship of its own regional Friday with an 8-4 victory over Carlyle.

The Eagles stepped out to a 3-0 first inning lead and never looked back, banging out 12 hits in the contest. Grunloh had a double and an RBI while Mammoser had a single, double and two RBI. Prater hit a home run and finished with three RBIi while Weber had a single, double and an RBI.

Jansen was the winning pither on a three-hitter with four strikeouts.

The Eagles improve to 18-9 and will next face Piasa Southwestern at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Teutopolis Sectional.
