Borries, Probst Sign To Play For Delta State University

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Delta State University Head Baseball Coach Mike Kinnison announced on Wednesday that 10 student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to play for the Statesmen in 2017.
 
The class consists of seven transfers and three high school signees and includes three pitchers, four position players and three dual position players.
 
Zach Bercherer (RHP, Rend Lake CC), Andy Borries (LHP, Kaskaskia College), Brian Lane (C, Mississippi Gulf Coach Community College), Matt Mitchell (OF/LHP, East Central Community College), Justin Nussbaum (SS, Mississippi Gulf Coach Community College), Darren Probst (RHP/Kaskaskia College), Zach Shannon (1B/RHP, Wabash College) make up the seven junior college transfers.  
 
Darek Sargent (IF, Central Magnet High School), Bradley Sanford (C, Grenada High School) and Sam Williams (OF/RHP, Ripley (Tenn.) High School) are the three high school signees.
 
"Our staff is pleased with this group of fall commitments and feel they will make a positive impact on our program," Kinnison said. "I appreciate the time and effort Coach (Stephen) Waggener and Coach (Eric) Patten have given to the evaluation and recruiting process."

Andy Borries                LHP          6-3    215     Jr.     Teutopolis, Ill./Kaskaskia College
Borries is a left-handed pitcher from Kaskaskia College in Centralia, Illinois.  The Teutroplis, Ill., native posted a 4.68 ERA with 20 strikeouts and 20 walks during his freshman campaign. Borries gave up 30 runs, 22 earned, in 41.1 innings pitching for Coach Mitch Koester.

Darren Probst              RHP          6-5    215  Jr.            Teutopolis, Ill./Kaskaskia College
Probst is a right-handed hurler out of Kaskaskia College in Centralia, Ill.  The Teutopolis, Ill., native made 15 appearances primarily in middle relief recording two saves and 11 strikeouts. He yielded eight runs, five earned, in 23.2 innings pitched for Head Coach Mitch Koester.

Zach Bercherer           RHP          6-5    230     Jr.     Troy, Ill./Rend Lake College
Bercherer signs with the Statesmen out of Rend Lake College in Ina, Ill.  The Troy, Ill., native made eight appearances with one start for Coach Tony Etnier in 2015. He posted a 4-3 record with a 2.61 ERA, 51 strikeouts, and 28 walks, in 48.1 innings pitched.  

Brian Lane                      C                 6-0    210     Jr.     Spanish Fort, Ala./Miss. Gulf Coach CC
Lane signs with the Statesmen out of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston. The Spanish Fort, Ala., native batted .357 with nine doubles and 13 RBIs as a freshman for Head Coach and former Statesman Rodney Batts at MGCCC.

Matt Mitchell                OF/LHP 6-1    190     Jr.     Lake, Miss./East Central Community College
Mitchell is an outfielder and left-handed pitcher from East Central Community College in Decatur, Miss. The Lake native batted .298 with four doubles and eight RBIs in 27 games, 20 starts for Head Coach Neal Holliman. Mitchell made 12 appearances with five starts on the mound, recording 31 strikeouts and in 26 innings.

Justin Nussbaum      IF              5-9    170     Jr.     Mandeville, La./Miss. Gulf Coast CC
Nussbaum is a shortstop out of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.  The Mandeville, La, native batted .337 with two doubles, one home run, 10 RBIs and nine steals in 29 games. He also played for Rodney Batts.

Darek Sargent             IF                6-1    180     Fr.     Smyrna, Tenn./Central Magnet HS
Sargent is an infielder out of Central Magnet High School in Smyrna, Tenn. Sargent earned 2015 District 8-AA Player of the Year honors, hitting .426 with 43 runs scored, four home runs, 45 RBIs and 35 steals (36 attempts) last season. In 2014, Sargent earned All-State, District Co-Player of the Year and Region Position Player of the Year honors while batting .437 with 46 RBIs. Sargent holds the Tennesse High School record for career assists.
 
Zach Shannon              1B/RHP 6-3    225     Jr.     Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley College
Shannon is a first baseman and right-handed pitcher from Wabash Valley College in Mount Carmel, Ill.  Shannon was ranked No. 30 by Perfect Game coming out of Anderson High School in 2014. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native spent his freshman year at UC-Claremont before transferring to Wabash Valley College.

Bradley Sanford        C                 6-0    205     Fr.     Grenada, Miss./Grenada HS
Sanford is a catcher for Head Coach and former Statesmen Jake Yarborough at Grenada High School in Grenada.  Sanford played in 23 games with three doubles and 17 RBIs with a fielding percentage of .980 as a junior in 2015.

Sam Williams               OF/RHP 6-3    180 Fr.            Ripley, Tenn./Ripley HS
Williams has played in the outfield and pitched the last two years for Ripley High School in Ripley, Tenn. Entering his senior year, Williams has a career .343 batting average with 14 doubles, one triple, three home runs and 45 RBIs at the plate. On the mound, Williams is 8-5 with a 3.01 ERA in 18 appearances, 14 starts, in two seasons on the varsity squad. He has allowed 53 runs, 39 earned, with 92 strikeouts and 31 walks in 90.2 innings of work.
