Seth Maness came into the game in a tight spot and got some big outs for St. Louis Cardinals. Maness got three straight outs after coming in with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to help the Cardinals hold off the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-3 on Thursday night.

Steve Cishek started the inning and walked the bases loaded before being replaced by Maness, who struck out David Peralta and Welington Castillo and got Jake Lamb to roll out to first to end what could have been a big inning for Arizona.

"You try not to think too much," Maness said. "You know the bases are loaded but it's just one pitch at a time, trying to execute that pitch and on to the next pitch."

Cishek said he felt fine, but the ball was taking off out of his hand. He then got to sit and watch Maness work.

"It was amazing. It was a huge relief. That's what we do, pick each other up." Cishek said. "He was incredible."

Giants 9, Cubs 1

Rookie Kelby Tomlinson wasn't sure how to react when his grand slam was replayed on the stadium video board. Veteran Marlon Byrd reminded him to smile and take in the moment.

Tomlinson hit a slam for his first career home run and Byrd added a three-run shot, leading Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants over the Chicago Cubs 9-1 on Thursday.

The win moved the Giants within 5 1/2 games of the Cubs for the second NL wild-card spot.

Bumgarner (16-6) struck out 12 in six innings, giving up one run and two hits. He won his fifth straight start and matched the Cubs' Jake Arrieta for most victories in the majors.

White Sox 4, Mariners 2

On a night they had an unconventional look, the Chicago White Sox got a strong game from one of their more unconventional players. Adam Eaton had three hits and scored three runs to help Chicago beat the Seattle Mariners 4-2 Thursday night.

Carlos Rodon took a shutout into the seventh inning and Jose Abreu and Trayce Thompson had RBI doubles for the White Sox, who wore throwback uniforms that debuted in 1976 and included white wide-collared untucked jerseys paired with navy blue pants and white socks.

"(Eaton) probably wants to wear these all the time," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "Getting on base, he was dirty, running around. I thought he looked great, too. This probably fits him more than anybody else of how it looks."

Eaton reached base four times and his three runs were a season high, despite wearing uniforms he would've preferred to tuck in.
