Newton Finishes Third At Jr. Legion State Tournament

Newton finished third at the Junior Legion State Tournament held at Quincy University Stadium, Quincy during the weekend.

In game one, Newton defeated Danville Gold 1-0. Mitch Jansen pitched a complete game shutout, giving up three hits, had four strikeouts and one walk. This was the first time all year Danville was shut out in a ball game.

Newton scored its run in the fourth inning. Mitch Bierman reached on an error, Tim Weber forced him at second base. Jansen then reached on a single. With runners on first and second, John Grunloh doubled down the left field line to score Tim Weber.

In the second contest, Breese Gray defeated Newton 8-0.

Weber was the losing pitcher in this contest working into the fourth inning. Brock Mammoser and Grunloh also logged some work in this game. Breese scored one in the first, three in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one in the sixth.

Newton had four hits as Mammoser had a double, Ben Britton a single, Weber a single and Jansen a single.

Newton defeated Shelby County 9-2 in the third contest.

Nate Meinhart pitched the complete game victory.He gave up two runs, on five hits. struck out three and walked two.

Newton scored seven times in the first inning and added single tallies in the fourth and seventh.

Grunloh had a single, double and two runs batted in. Meinhart had two singles and Bierman singled. Weber had a triple and two runs batted in. Jansen had a double, triple and two RBI. Joe Stone had a single and an RBI and Nick Cohorst had a single.

Breese edged Newton 4-3 in the fourth game. Jansen started, pitching three shutout innings and Luke Geier took the tough luck loss, giving up three unearned runs.

The game ended with Kyle Kocher on second after singling and being sacrificed to second. Meinhart then lined into a game ending double play to the second baseman who was keeping the runner at second close.

Hitting for Newton were Weber with an RBI triple, Luke Geier with a double, Noah Wagy with an RBI double, Meinhart had a double, Bierman had a single, Cohorst had an RBI single and Kyle Kocher singled.

Newton had single run tallies in the first, second and sixth.

Jansen, Weber and Grunloh made the All-Tournament team for the state tournament.

Newton finished the season 26-8, third place in the state tournament and won the Altamont Summer Slammin Tournament at the beginning of June.

Newton lost four games in the month of July, all four games to the two teams playing for first and second in the state tournament, Breese Gray and Swansea/Fairview Heights.
