Effingham Senior Legion Goes 1-3 at Greenville Tourney

Effingham Senior Legion Post 120 competed in the Greenville Tournament during the weekend and finished with a 1-3 record.

In the opening contest, Effingham fell to Alton 9-1. Alton was sparked by Buhs and Loew, who teamed up for four hits and five RBI.

Lane Koenig picked up the pitching loss, allowing nine runs in six innings, walking eight and striking out 10. Alton scored two runs in the first inning and led 4-1 after three then tallied three in the fourth and two more in the sixth.

In the second contest, Shelby County Posts 289-611-725 handed Effingham Legion a 4-0 loss. Nick Miller did all he could to give Effingham a boost. Miller paced Effingham at the plate with two singles and a double. He also picked up the pitching loss, allowing all four runs, walking two and striking out three.

Christian Vonderheide led the winners with a single, double, home run and one RBI. Tyler Hendryx had a home run and two RBI. Trevor Moore added a single and double and Jacob Kramer two singles and an RBI.

A five-run explosion in the fifth inning lifted Effingham to a 9-2 win over Piatt County in the first game Saturday. Effingham scored in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Reid Kocher, an error and a three-run triple by Michael Woltman. Woltman racked up four RBI on one hit.

Alex Hoelscher was a workhorse on the bump while bagging the win. Hoelscher pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs, five hits and one walk while striking out five.

Piatt County jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The lead stayed with Effingham after the thrd when it scored three runs on a fielder's choice and two singles.

In the final contest, Effingham fell to New Baden 2-0. New Baden's pitcher threw seven shutout innings, striking out six and giving up three hits.

New Baden scored both runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Elbe. Barnes led the winners with two doubles.

Efifngham had singles by Reid Kocher, Woltman and Hoelscher.

Shelby County Legion fell to Piatt County 12-6. The score was tied at 2-2 after three innings and 3-3 after four. Piatt County then tallied four runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth.

Piatt County banged out 14 hits in the contest. Shelby County had nine hits led by Vonderheide with two singles, a double and an RBI, Tyler Romack with two singles, Luke McConnell with two singles and two RBI and Devon Deremiah with a double and an RBI.

In the next contest, Metro East Bears Posts 199-126 edged Shelby County 1-0.

The lone run came in the first inning. Kory Loew pitched the win, allowing nine hits, two walks and striking out five.

Shelby County was led by Hendryx with three singles.
