EHS Downs Newton, 16-7 In Baseball

Effingham High School handed Newton a 16-7 baseball loss Tuesday in seven innings.

The Flaming Hearts scored six runs in the seventh on an error, a two-run double by Carter Hayes, an RBI double by Michael Woltman and a two-run homer by Hudson Graham.

Brennan Poland had a busy day at the plate for the Hearts, collecting two extra base hits. He doubled in the first and fifth innings and singled in the seventh.

In the top of the first, the Hearts took a 3-0 lead. Braydon Bone doubled and Adam Koester singled. Poland doubled, scoring Bone. Koester scored on an error and Poland came across the plate on a sacrifice by Lane Koenig.

Newton came back to tie the score with two runs in the second and a run in the third. EHS then produced two more runs in the fourth before breaking the game open with a five-run fifth.

The Eagles were led by Nick Reis with a double, home run and two RBI, John Grunloh with a home run and two RBI, Luke Geier with a single, double and two RBI and Mitch Bierman with a triple.
