Cardinals Walk Off On Reds

(St. Louis, MO) -- Jon Jay was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to give the Cardinals a 5-4 win over the Reds at Busch Stadium. Jhonny Peralta hit a solo shot in the win. It was Peralta's 17th of the year. Pat Neshek improved to 6-0 out of the pen as St. Louis won its third straight. Todd Frazier cranked a two-run dinger in the loss and Ryan Ludwick plated two runs. J.J. Hoover fell to 1-10 in relief for the Reds, who have lost seven of their last eight.

Cardinals infielder Mark Ellis is on the 15-day disabled list with an oblique strain. The Cards have recalled Greg Garcia from Triple-A Memphis to take his spot on the roster. Garcia hit .200 in seven games with St. Louis earlier this season. Ellis is batting just .192.

The Cardinals and Reds wrap up their three-game series tonight at Busch Stadium. Lance Lynn goes after his 14th win for St. Louis, while 15-game winner Johnny Cueto starts for Cincinnati. After tonight, the Cards play in Philadelphia Friday.  


Cubs Get Controversial Win Over Giants

(Chicago, IL) -- After over 4 1/2 hours of a rain delay, the Cubs came away with a controversial 2-0 win over the Giants from Wrigley Field. Rain lasted for just around 15 minutes, but the grounds crew had problems getting the tarp on the field, creating messy conditions. Rather than suspend the game, rules dictate that it is a final instead. Tsuyoshi Wada improved to 3-1 by tossing all five innings and scattering six hits for Chicago. Anthony Rizzo poked a two-run homer as the Cubs won their third straight. Ryan Vogelsong was saddled with the loss for San Francisco after allowing two runs in four frames. He fell to 7-9 as the Giants lost their seventh in 10 games.


Orioles Upend White Sox

(Chicago, IL) -- Delmon Young singled in a run and scored on Chris Davis' two-run double in the sixth as the Orioles dropped the White Sox 5-1 from U.S. Cellular Field. Nick Hundley hit a solo homer and Adam Jones knocked in a run as Baltimore won its third straight and fifth in seven games to move a season-high 20 games over the .500 mark. Chris Tillman fanned nine over eight innings of one-run ball improving to 10-5. Jose Abreu hit his 32nd homer to account for Chicago's lone run.  He's now tied with O's slugger Nelson Cruz for the American League lead in roundtrippers. Jose Quintana gave up four runs across six innings and fell to 6-10. The Sox have lost their fourth in six games.


Braves Smack Pirates

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- The Braves spoiled Andrew McCutchen's return to the lineup cruising to a 11-3 win over the Pirates in the second of three at PNC Park.  Justin Upton was 2-for-5 with a home run and five RBI, while Jason Heyward drove in three with two hits. Evan Gattis smacked a solo homer for Atlanta, which has won five in-a-row and goes for the three-game sweep Wednesday night. Aaron Harang improved to 10-7, falling two outs short of a complete game. McCutchen was 0-for-4 with a strikeout in his first action since August 3. Francisco Liriano fell to 3-10 with the loss after allowing nine runs, seven earned, in four-plus innings. Pittsburgh dropped its seventh straight.


Nationals Hammer Diamondbacks For Eighth Straight Win

(Washington, DC) -- Ian Desmond went 3-for-4 with four RBI as the Nationals hammered the Diamondbacks 8-1 in the second of four games in DC. Asdrubal Cabrera's three-run double capped a six-run third inning for the Nats, who have won eight straight. Stephen Strasburg tossed eight innings of one-run ball to even his record at 10-10. David Peralta homered in the first for Arizona's only run. Chase Anderson allowed six runs in two-plus frames to fall to 7-5 with the loss. The D'backs have dropped four in-a-row. Ender Inciarte's team-rookie-record 18-game hitting streak came to an end.


Astros Blast Yankees

(Bronx, NY) -- Chris Carter smashed a 3-0 pitch from David Robertson for a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to give the Astros a 7-4 win over the Yankees in the first of three from the Bronx. It was Carter's 30th homer of the season. Jason Castro drove in the other run for Houston, which has won two in-a-row and three of four  Reliever Josh Fields earned the win and Chad Qualls locked up his 14th save. Brian McCann's two-run homer in the fourth gave New York a 2-0 lead. After Houston took a 4-2 advantage in the sixth, the Yankees answered with Martin Prado's two-run double in the bottom of the inning.  Reliever David Robertson was handed his fourth loss.


Angels Sink Sox In Ninth

(Boston, MA) -- Chris Iannetta's one-run double in the top of the ninth lifted the Angels to a 4-3 win over the Red Sox in the second of four games at Fenway Park. Iannetta finished with two hits. Albert Pujols was also 2-for-3 with an RBI, while reliever Joe Smith picked up his fifth win and Huston Street nailed down his 10th save. Los Angeles has won six of seven including the first two of this series. David Ortiz, Mike Napoli and Brock Holt each had an RBI in the defeat. Ortiz smacked his 29th homer of the season. Boston closer Koji Uehara was tagged with his third loss giving up the game-winning run. The Red Sox have lost three straight and four of five.


Tigers Top Rays In 11

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- Victor Martinez and Bryan Holaday drove in a run each during a three-run 11th inning as the Tigers edged the Rays 8-6 in the opener of a three-game set at Tropicana Field. J.D. Martinez homered and Ian Kinsler had an RBI and scored twice for Detroit, which has won four of six. Jim Johnson picked up his first win with his new team and Joe Nathan notched his 26th save despite giving up a run in the bottom of the 11th. James Loney went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer for the Rays, who have dropped three straight since a three-game winning streak. Grant Balfour suffered the loss.


Indians Rally To Top Twins

(Minneapolis, MN) -- The Indians overcame an early five-run deficit to pick up a 7-5 win over the Twins at Target Field. Yan Gomes went 3-for-4 with a solo shot and Zach Walters and Tyler Holt batted in a pair of runs. Kyle Crockett picked up the win in relief and Cody Allen notched the save for Cleveland, which has won three of four. Oswaldo Arcia blasted a three-run homer to cap a five-run first inning for Minnesota. Brian Duensing took the loss giving up two runs in less than an inning as the Twins dropped their third straight.


Iwakuma Deals Mariners Past Phillies

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Hisashi Iwakuma totaled 11 strikeouts in eight shutout innings to lead the Mariners to a 5-2 win over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.  Iwakuma improved to 12-6 with the win and Fernando Rodney closed it out for his 36th save. Mike Zunino drove in two runs and Kyle Seager belted a solo shot for Seattle, which has won seven of its last nine. A.J. Burnett struck out nine batters, but gave up all five runs in 7 2/3 innings for his 14th loss of the season. Dominic Brown doubled in a run and Chase Utley scored on a wild pitch as Philly fell to 3-8 in its last 11 games.


Marlins Walk Off On Rangers

(Miami, FL) -- Giancarlo Stanton delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th to give Miami a 4-3 win over Texas at Marlins Park. Marcell Ozuna scored twice and drove in a run while Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Adeiny Hechavarria added an RBI each in the win. Jarred Cosart allowed one run in six frames for the no-decision with Sam Dyson grabbing the win. The Marlins have won three in-a-row and six of their last eight. Neal Cotts took the loss for Texas, which has dropped five of its last six contests. Daniel Robertson and Robinson Chirinos drove in a run each in defeat.


Infante Leads Royals Past Rockies

(Denver, CO) -- Omar Infante went 4-for-5 with three doubles and four RBI to guide the Royals to a 7-4 win over the Rockies at Coors Field. Salvador Perez and Lorenzo Cain batted in a run each as Kansas City improved to 17-3 in its last 20 games. James Shields struck out six in six innings of two-run ball to improve to 12-6 and Greg Holland closed it out for his league-leading 39th save. Drew Stubbs tallied a trio of hits and a two-run shot and Nick Arenado hit a solo homer for Colorado, which had won three of four entering the game. Tyler Matzek took the loss, giving up three runs in 6 2/3 innings.


Athletics Pick Apart Mets

(Oakland, CA) -- Coco Crisp delivered a three-run triple in the fourth as the Athletics downed the Mets 6-2 in Oakland. Alberto Callaspo added a sac-fly while Josh Reddick hit a two-run homer for the A's, who halted a five-game slide. Scott Kazmir improved to 14-5 with six innings of one-run ball. Dillon Gee fell to 4-6 after giving up four runs in 5 2/3 innings for New York. Travis d'Arnaud hit a solo homer while Anthony Recker doubled in a run as the Mets lost their third straight.
