Red Sox Edge Cardinals In Ninth

(St. Louis, MO) -- Xander Bogaerts plated the go-ahead run on a sac-fly in the top of the ninth inning as the Red Sox edged the Cardinals 2-1 in the middle of a three-game set at Busch Stadium.  Bogaerts doubled in the other run in the fourth for Boston, which snapped a three-game skid and won for just the third time in 14 contests. Joe Kelly tossed seven innings of one-run, three-hit ball but did not factor in the decision against his former team. Junichi Tazawa picked up the win and Koji Uehara earned his 23rd save. Matt Adams singled in the lone run in the first for the Redbirds, who had won their previous three.  Trevor Rosenthal fell to 1-6 with the loss.

Four Cardinal pitchers at the Rookie level combined to throw a no-hitter against the Gulf Coast League Nationals. Frederis Parra surrendered a run while walking three. Silas Bohannan, Andrew Reidt and Kevin Alexander finished the game with six strikeouts and two walks. Alexander grabbed the save with Bohannan taking the win.

 

Rockies Crush Cubs

(Denver, CO) -- Carlos Gonzalez and Michael McHenry both hit two-run homers as the Rockies crushed the Cubs 13-4 in the middle of a three-game set at Coors Field. McHenry finished with three hits, three RBI and scored twice, while "CarGo" also had three hits, two RBI and three runs scored. Corey Dickerson went 4-for-4, drove in three and scored a trio of runs for the Rockies, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Jordan Lyles allowed four runs in six innings to up his record to 6-1. Arismendy Alcantara clubbed a two-run homer for Chicago, which had won four of its previous five. Jake Arrieta was rocked for nine runs in five-plus frames as he fell to 6-3 with the loss.

The Cubs activated reliever Kyuji Fujikawa from the 60-day disabled list prior to Wednesday's game against the Rockies. Fujikawa has been sidelined after undergoing Tommy John surgery in June of 2013. In a corresponding move, the Cubs designated outfielder Nate Schierholtz for assignment. Schierholtz was batting .192 with six home runs and 33 RBI.

The Cubs are adding right-hander Jacob Turner. CSN Chicago reports the Cubs have claimed Turner off waivers from the Marlins. He was 4-7 with a 5.97 ERA in 20 games for Miami.


Rosales Powers Rangers Past White Sox

(Chicago, IL) -- Adam Rosales homered twice and Nick Tepesch outdueled Chris Sale as the Rangers beat the White Sox 3-1 at U.S. Cellular Field.  Rosales hit a two-run blast in the second and a solo shot in the seventh to account for all three Texas runs. The Rangers have won consecutive games for the first time since late June. Tepesch pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings to improve to 4-7. Neftali Feliz got the final two outs for his fourth save.  Sale gave up two runs in six frames to fall to 10-2. Alexei Ramirez went 3-for-4 and Dayan Viciedo homered for Chicago in defeat.


Nationals Swat Mets

(Washington, D.C.) -- Adam LaRoche left the yard twice to power the Nationals to a 7-1 win over the Mets in the second of three from D.C. LaRoche drove in three, while Danny Espinosa hit a three-run shot.  Doug Fister improved to 11-3 giving up one unearned run in 7 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts.  Washington ended a two-game losing streak.  Daniel Murphy was 2-for-4 and drove in the only New York run. Jon Niese took the loss giving up six runs on eight hits in six innings. The Mets have lost three of four.


Pirates Top Marlins

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- The Pirates scored four times in the first and held on for a 7-3 win against the Marlins at PNC Park. Josh Harrison was 3-for-4 with two runs while Gregory Polanco and Russell Martin also scored twice for Pittsburgh, which snapped a two-game slide. Ike Davis and Gaby Sanchez knocked in two runs each for the Bucs. Jeff Locke tossed seven innings of three-run ball for the win. Tom Koehler took the loss after giving up four runs in six innings.  Christian Yelich hit a two-run homer for Miami, which has lost five of seven.


Giants Top Brewers

(Milwaukee, WI) -- Pablo Sandoval hit a two-run homer and drove in three as the Giants topped the Brewers 7-4 at Miller Park. Sandoval collected three hits while Michael Morse added three RBI. Ryan Vogelsong earned his seventh win with six-innings of one-run ball as the Giants won for the third time in four games.  Carlos Gomez and Khris Davis tagged solo shots in the loss. Aramis Ramirez plated two runs for the Brewers, who have dropped three of four. Yovani Gallardo fell to 6-6 after giving up four runs in four innings.


Kiermaier, Hellickson Help Rays Salvage Finale Against Athletics

(Oakland, CA) -- Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-run homer and drove in three as the Rays beat the Athletics 7-3 at O.co Coliseum. Desmond Jennings had a two-run single and Ben Zobrist went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Tampa Bay, which avoided a three-game sweep. Jeremy Hellickson allowed just two hits and one run in seven innings to even his record at 1-1. Sonny Gray was tagged for 10 hits and all seven runs in less than five innings to fall to 12-5 with the loss. Eric Sogard [[ SO-gard ]] hit a solo homer in the fifth and Josh Reddick added a two-run double in the ninth for the A's in the setback.


Yankees Clip Tigers

(Bronx, NY) -- Chase Headley and Brian McCann each hit a solo home run to help the Yankees take care of the Tigers, 5-1, in the third of four from the Bronx.  New York added three insurance runs in the eighth headlined by a Mark Teixeira RBI single. Teixeira had to leave the game after injuring his pinky finger scoring on a play at the plate later in the inning. Chris Capuano struck out eight and allowed one unearned run over six-and-two-thirds innings, but wasn't apart of the decision. Adam Warren picked up the win for the Yanks, who have won four of five. Miguel Cabrera's RBI sac fly in the first inning produced the only run for the Tigers. Justin Verlander fell to 10-10, giving up two runs in seven innings. Detroit is 4-2 in its last six.


Blue Jays Fly Past Orioles

(Toronto, Ontario) -- Jose Bautista was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in the Blue Jays 5-1 victory against the Orioles at the Rogers Centre. Drew Hutchison fell one out short of a complete game, allowing one hit and one run with eight strikeouts. He improved to 8-9. Melky Cabrera compiled three hits and scored two runs for Toronto, which ended a four-game losing streak.  Chris Davis' solo homer was the only offense for Baltimore. Wei-Yin Chen took the loss after giving up four runs in five innings. The Orioles had won three in-a-row.


Mariners Keep Braves Reeling

(Seattle, WA) -- Dustin Ackley hit a solo homer and Logan Morrison added a three-run shot to put the Mariners ahead for good in a 7-3 win over the Braves at Safeco Field. The four-run third inning erased a 3-1 deficit for Seattle, which handed Atlanta its eighth straight loss. Kyle Seager went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the M's, who swept the two-game Interleague series for their third win in four games. Chris Young pitched five innings of three-run ball to move to 10-6 with the win. Julio Teheran took the loss to fall to 10-8 for the Braves. Freddie Freeman went 3-for-4 with a two-run double for Atlanta.


Phillies Pound Astros

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Chase Utley belted a three-run homer as the Phillies pounded the Astros 10-3 in the second of three games at Citizens Bank Park. Ryan Howard had two hits and two RBI, while Ben Revere went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs for the Phils, who have won four of their last six. David Buchanan allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings to up his mark to 6-5 with the victory. Jose Altuve had two hits, an RBI and scored for Houston, which has lost two in-a-row after a three-game winning streak. Brad Peacock was tagged for eight runs in five frames as he slipped to 3-and-8.


Reds Cruise Past Indians

(Cincinnati, OH) -- Zack Cozart clubbed a three-run homer and drove in four as the Reds cruised to an 8-3 win over the Indians at Great American Ball Park.  Kris Negron went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three runs for the Reds, who have won three of four. Mat Latos tossed 7 2/3 innings of three-run ball as he improved to 4-3. Yan Gomes homered and Ryan Raburn had a two-run double during a three-run eighth inning for Cleveland, which has lost two straight since a four-game winning streak. Danny Salazar surrendered five runs in four frames to fall to 4-5 with the loss.


Moustakas, Royals Edge Diamondbacks

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Mike Moustakas smacked a two-run homer and drove in all four runs in the Royals' 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks in the middle of a three-game set at Chase Field. Yordano Ventura struck out eight over six innings of two-run ball as he improved to 9-8. Greg Holland closed it out for his 32nd save. KC has won three straight and six of its last seven overall. Aaron Hill, David Peralta and Mark Trumbo plated a run each for the D'backs, who have dropped four of five. Josh Collmenter fell to 9-8 after allowing three runs in six frames.


Dodgers Hold Off Angels

(Anaheim, CA) -- Dan Haren took a perfect game into the sixth inning as the Dodgers held on for a 2-1 win over the Angels in Anaheim. Hank Conger singled with one out in the sixth to end the perfect game bid. Haren ended up allowing one run on three hits over seven-and-a-third innings as he evened his record at 9-9. Kenley Jansen closed it out for his 32nd save. Matt Kemp homered and Andre Ethier doubled in the other run for the Dodgers, who have won two of the first three in the four-game Freeway Series. Chris Iannetta plated the lone run on a sac-fly in the eighth inning for the Halos, who have dropped two in-a-row. Matt Shoemaker allowed two runs in six frames to fall to 9-4 with the loss.
