Newton Drops Third Place Jr. Legion Game To Orient

BETHALTO -- The Orient Miners Post 1961 knocked out Newton in the third place game of the Junior American Legion Fifth Division Tournament Monday, 14-4.

Adam Waters was the winning pitcher for the Miners with a complete game, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out five.

Newton took a 1-0 early lead in the contest. But Orient came back with five runs in the third inning and held a slight 5-4 lead.  Orient then exploded for nine runs in the sixth to take the 10-run victory.

Orient advances to the State Tournament at Whitey Herzog Stadium in Belleville Thursday where it will face Danville at 11 a.m.

Newton ends the season with a 17-11 mark.

In the championship game, Salem Post 128 faced Breese Gray. There was no report on the game.
