Effingham Post 120 Seniors Win Twice, Shelby Co. Downs Mattoon

Effingham Post 120 Seniors picked up a doubleheader victory over Olney Tuesday evening.

Zac Gardewine pitched a six-hitter with 10 strikeouts. He's had no earned runs in 96 innings pitched.

Carter Hayes went 4-for-4 at the plate for Effingham. He had a single, double and triple and had a chance to hit for the cycle but finished doubling in his fourth at bat. He scored twice. Alex Carie had two singles.

In the second contest, Post 120 blanked Olney 10-0. Kyle Bourgeois pitched a five-inning shutout. He struck out three, walked two and surrendered only three hits.

Hayes capped off a 6-for-6 night going 2-for-2 with a double and the home run that eluded him in the first contest. He finished with five RBI. Preston Walker had a double, triple and drove in a run.

"Zac threw another beautiful game in the opener," said  Coach Brian Hayes. "Kyle went the distance for us in the second game."

Shelby County American Legion Posts 289-611-725 bounced Mattoon's Babe Ruth team 15-4 Tuesday.

Shelby County took a 5-0 first inning lead and upped that to 8-0 in the second. Shelby County had 11 hits in the contest. Tyler Hendryx had a single and double while Gunner Thies had a single, double and three RBI. Zach Monroe added a triple and an RBI and Jacob Kramer two singles and two RBI.
