Cubs Roll Reds

(Chicago, IL) -- Jake Arrieta struck out nine batters and took a perfect game into the seventh as the Cubs beat the Reds 7-3 at Wrigley Field. Arrieta pitched seven innings of two-run ball to improve to 4-and-1 to snap Chicago's three-game losing streak. Anthony Rizzo went deep and Welington Castillo drove in two runs in the win. Homer Bailey fanned six but surrendered four runs in five-and-a-third innings to fall to 7-4. Devin Mesoraco hit a two-run homer and Jay Bruce batted in a run for the Reds, who had won three straight.

The Cubs and Reds wrap up a three-game series at Wrigley Field tonight. Edwin Jackson takes the mound for Chicago. He's 5-7 on the year with a 5.12 ERA. Cincinnati counters with right-hander Mat Latos, who is making just his third start. First pitch is at 6:05.


Rockies Double Up Cardinals

(Denver, CO) -- The Rockies pounded out 17 hits on their way to a 10-5 win over the Cardinals at Coors Field. Justin Morneau hit a three-run homer and drove in six while Drew Stubbs went deep on a solo shot. Ryan Wheeler knocked in a pair while Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs. Jorge De La Rosa gave up five runs over seven innings to improve to 7-6 as Colorado stopped a seven-game slide. Nick Greenwood allowed three runs in an-inning-and-a-third of relief work to suffer the loss for St. Louis. Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run blast for the Cardinals, who saw a three-game win streak end.

Pitcher Shelby Miller left his start on Tuesday with tightness in his back. Miller lasted just two-and-two-thirds before leaving and walked four hitters.  The decision came after the righty fell behind in the count to Rockies pitcher Jorge De La Rosa. Miller threw 73 pitches in the outing, gave up three runs on six hits and stuck out two.  


White Sox Edge Orioles

(Baltimore, MD) -- Alejandro De Aza went 2-for-3 with two RBI as the White Sox held on late for a 4-2 win over the Orioles at Camden Yards. Gordon Beckham hit a solo homer while Jose Quintana tossed seven innings of one-run ball while fanning eight to improve to 4-7. Ronald Belisario pitched the ninth for his eighth save as Chicago stopped a five-game skid.  Miguel Gonzalez allowed three runs over five innings and fell to 4-5 for Baltimore. Steve Pearce had two hits and hit a solo homer while Adam Jones and Manny Machado each added two knocks. The O's had won five of their last six.

The White Sox close out their three-game series with the Orioles tonight. Chicago sends Hector Noesi to the mound. He's 2-5 with a 5.34 ERA. Baltimore counters with Ubaldo Jimenez, who is 2-8 with a 4.63 ERA. First pitch from Camden Yards is at 6:05.

 

Phillies Down Marlins

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Marlon Byrd hit a two-run homer in the first inning as the Phillies took down the Marlins 7-4 at Citizens Bank Park. Cody Asche doubled in two runs and two players scored on wild pitches as Philadelphia snapped a three-game losing streak. David Buchanan pitched five innings of two-run ball to notch the win and Jonathan Papelbon picked up his 18th save. Andrew Heaney got hit for five runs in five frames as he fell to 0-2 for the Marlins, who have lost three of four. Garrett Jones went deep and Casey McGehee knocked in a run in defeat.


Nationals Top Brewers In 16

(Milwaukee, WI) -- Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run home run to lift the Brewers to a 4-2 win over Washington in 16 innings at Miller Park. Zimmerman and Anthony Rendon finished with three hits each, while Rendon added a solo shot. Jordan Zimmerman stuck out nine over six innings of work to take the no-decision while Tyler Clippard grabbed the win and Rafael Soriano earned his 18th save. The Nationals have won four straight. Ryan Braun drove in both runs for Milwaukee, which drops their second straight. Mike Fiers tossed four frames of relief and took the loss, falling to 0-1.


Blue Jays Walk Off Yankees

(Toronto, Ontario) -- Jose Reyes touched home plate in the bottom of the ninth on a throwing error by Yankees third baseman Yangervis Solarte and the Blue Jays got to celebrate a 7-6 win over the Yankees at the Rogers Centre. Toronto jumped out to a 6-0 lead behind a Dioner Navarro three-run homer in the fourth and a two RBI single from Colby Rasmus the following inning. Reliever Casey Janssen grabbed his second win. Derek Jeter's solo homer and Brian Roberts two-run shot helped New York battle back to tie the game at six. Reliever Adam Warren fell to 1-4 despite not giving up an earned run. Toronto has won the first two of the three-game set.


Tigers Roll Rangers In Kinsler's Return

(Arlington, TX) -- Ian Kinsler hit a solo shot in his first at-bat back in Arlington and helped the Tigers top the Rangers 8-2 at Globe Life Park. Kinsler finished with three RBI while J.D. Martinez hit a two-run dinger in the win. The Tigers pounded out 16 hits with Rajai Davis and Alex Avila collecting three hits each. Drew Smyly tossed six innings and was charged with one unearned run to improve to 4-6 and extend the Tigers winning streak to five games. Colby Lewis fell to 5-5 after giving up four runs in 6 1/3. Adrian Beltre collected his 25-hundredth hit in the loss and finished 4-for-4 at the plate with a RBI. Texas has dropped six straight.


Angels Hold Off Twins

(Anaheim, CA) -- Josh Hamilton's two-run single ignited a five-run first inning as the Angels held on for an 8-6 win over the Twins in the opener of a three-game series in Anaheim. Mike Trout hit a two-run homer, while Howie Kendrick had two hits, two RBI and scored a run for the Halos, who have won four straight. C.J. Wilson improved to 8-6 despite giving up six runs in five innings. Joe Smith closed it out for his sixth save. Josh Willingham and Kendrys Morales hit back-to-back homers during a five-run second inning for Minnesota, which had a four-game winning streak snapped. Kyle Gibson was knocked around for seven runs in just two frames to fall to 6-6 with the loss.


Mariners Dominate Red Sox

(Seattle, WA) -- Kyle Seager homered and drove in four runs to lead the Mariners to an 8-2 win over the Red Sox at Safeco Field. Mike Zunino hit a solo shot and Endy Chavez drove in a run off three hits to help Seattle to its fifth straight victory. Joe Beimel picked up the win in relief to improve to 2-1. Jake Peavy got hammered for seven runs in five frames to fall to 1-6 for the Red Sox, who have lost five of six. Brock Holt hit a two-run homer in the fourth for Boston's only runs.


Pirates Hang On To Down Rays

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- Russell Martin went 2-for-4 with a solo home run as the Pirates defeated the Rays 6-5 at Tropicana Field. Andrew McCutchen notched two RBI and Josh Harrison and Starling Marte each drove in a run for Pittsburgh, which won its fourth straight. Jeff Locke gave up three runs in seven-and-a-third innings to pick up his first win and Mark Melancon nailed down his 13th save. Chris Archer fanned seven but gave up four earned runs in seven frames to fall to 4-5. Evan Longoria hit a two-run shot in the eighth and Brandon Guyer drove in two in the ninth as the Rays lost their second in-a-row.


Mets Pound Athletics

(Flushing, NY) -- Chris Young homered twice and Bartolo Colon fired eight strong innings as the Mets pounded the Athletics 10-1 in the opener of a brief two-game Interleague series at Citi Field. Colon struck out eight while giving up just one run as he improved to 8-5 with the win. Travis d'Arnaud hit a three-run homer and Curtis Granderson added a two-run blast and drove in three for the Mets, who have won three straight and five of their last six overall. Yoenis Cespedes doubled in the lone run for Oakland, which has lost two in-a-row since a five-game winning streak. Scott Kazmir was rocked for seven runs in three frames as he dipped to 9-and-3.


Upton's Lead Braves To Win Over Astros

(Houston, TX) -- B.J. Upton and Justin Upton both homered to lead the Braves past the Astros 3-2 in the opener of a three-game series at Minute Maid Park.  It's the fourth time the Upton brothers went deep in the same game, which ties the Major League record for siblings. Chris Johnson doubled in the other run for Atlanta, which snapped a two-game skid. Aaron Harang tossed six innings of two-run ball as he evened his record at 6-6. Craig Kimbrel closed it out for his 22nd save. George Springer homered and Jonathan Villar drove in a run for the Astros, who have dropped three in-a-row and seven of their last eight overall. Scott Feldman allowed all three runs in six frames as he fell to 3-5 with the loss.


Kershaw Pitches Dodgers By Royals

(Kansas City, MO) -- Clayton Kershaw wasn't able to match Johnny Vander Meer, but still tossed a gem in leading the Dodgers to a 2-0 win over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Kershaw followed up his no-hitter last week by tossing eight innings of shutout ball, allowing six hits and a walk while striking out eight. He improved to 8-2 while Kenley Jansen closed it out for his 23rd save. Adrian Gonzalez knocked in a run in the first while Andre Ethier had an RBI single in the ninth for Los Angeles, which has won three out of four. Danny Duffy allowed a run over six frames to fall to 4-7 for Kansas City. Eric Hosmer and Danny Valencia each had two hits for the Royals, who have lost five of six.


Hill Lifts Diamondbacks Past Tribe

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Aaron Hill crushed an RBI single in the bottom of the 14th as the Diamondbacks outlasted the Indians 9-8 at Chase Field. Hill finished with two RBI while Gerrardo Parra had five of Arizona's 19 hits. Ender Inciarte went 4-for-7 while David Peralta hit a solo homer for the D'backs, who had lost three of four. Addison Reed blew a save for the Snakes in the ninth while Josh Collmenter got the win in relief to cap a nine-pitcher performance for Arizona. Mark Lowe took the loss for Cleveland, which used ten pitchers. Carlos Santana hit a two-run homer and went 4-for-5 while Yan Gomes had three hits and three RBI. The Indians have lost four straight.
