Shelby County Falls in Fourth Division Tourney

Shelby County Legion Posts 289-611-725 battled hard in the Senior American Legion Fourth Division Tournament at Laker Stadium in Paris during the weekend, coming back through elimination bracket play to pick up five straight games and reach the championship contest against Danville Post 210.

Shelby County then tallied a 7-6 victory in the opening game, forcing a second game, but the local squad finally fell, this time 7-2 to Danville.

In the opening game, Shelby County trailed Danville 5-0 before scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth. Shelby County then bounced back again with two in the bottom of the fifth and finally pushed ahead with four in the eighth. Danville scored another run in the top of the ninth but couldn't overcome the Shelby County charge.

Seth Kline was the winning pitcher, going 8 1/3 innings, allowing 10 hits, six runs, five walks and striking out five. Kyle Floyd pitched the final 2/3 inning to close down Danville. Floyd had a double and two RBI while Luke Hatfield had a single and double and Kline a double and an RBI.

That pushed the squad into the second game. This time around, Dnville again started off with a lead, going 2-1 in the first inning then tacked on two more in the third and seventh before finishing out with one in the ninth. Shelby County's lone runs came in the first and seventh.

Shelby County could muster only three hits against Danville's Jake England and Cash Kiser. England registered 11 strikeouts in six innings and Kiser three over three innings. Ryne Floyd had a single and a double for Shelby County.

Shelby County ends its season with a 32-15 record. Danville advances to a state tournament appearance in Mattoon.
