Marvin C. (Skip) Beck, 74, of Effingham, Illinois, formerly of Cowden, Illinois, passed away at 8:25 a.m. Monday, February 17, 2014 in Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday February 22, 2014 in the First Christian Church of Cowden. Pastor Nathan Harper will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday in the church and one hour before the service in the church Saturday. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, near Effingham. Skip was born May 31, 1939 in Cowden, the son of Harvey and Lulu Sloat Beck. He married Doris Hodson in 1959. In 1993 he married Janet Hardiek. Skip was the sole proprietor of Beck`s Shell Service Station in Cowden from 1959 until 1984. He then was employed at Goeckner Brothers in Effingham as an auto tech until 2002 when he retired. He came out of retirement to become a greenskeeper at the Cardinal Golf Course in Effingham from which he retired, for the last time, in 2011. Skip was an avid sports enthusiast. While in high school, he played basketball and baseball for the Cowden Hornets and still was a huge Hornets fan. The New York Yankees is the only major league baseball team for which he ever rooted. One of the greatest thrills of his life was getting to attend a ball game in Yankee Stadium.
Surviving are his wife, Janet; children, Rick (wife Melody) Beck of Hopkinsville, KY and Rhonda (husband Darrell) Clark of Cowden; step-son, Scott Krietemeyer of Effingham; Janet’s step-children, Amy Kingery, Donnie Krietemeyer and Perry Krietemeyer; grandchildren, Jacob (wife Katherine) Clark, Dakota Beck, Austin Beck and Sean Beck; step-grandchildren, Aaron Weck, Dillon Weck and Bryttanni Krietemayer; great-granddaughter, Cecilia Clark and brother, Buddy Dale (wife Leah) Beck of Shelbyville.
Skip was preceded in death by his son, Ronald Dean Beck; his parents, brothers and sisters, Marie Banning, Myrtle Blickem, Pansy Carlisle, Ravis Beck, Raymond Beck, Raleigh Beck, Leon Beck. Dean Beck and Robert Beck.
