Mr. Lewis was born on September 7, 1924, in Wheeler, Illinois. He was the son of John A. and Ethel (Mahaffey) Lewis. He married the love of his life, Rozella Elizabeth Portlock, on February 17, l950, in Villa Grove, Illinois and she preceded him in death on August 5, 1999. He was the owner/operator of Lewis House Moving, having been the third generation of Lewis House Moving. He retired in 1991, after having moved many houses, buildings, and barns, as well as fulfilling unique requests to move schoolhouses, train cabooses, and bridge structures. In the eyes of his girls, he was the most honest man who ever walked the earth. He stood tall, willing, proud, and ready to help all. He was a self-made man who loved and supported his family at all times, making many sacrifices so that his family could have not only what they needed, but what they wanted. He did so without ever complaining. Even during difficult times, including his deteriorating health, he thought only of others. Words cannot express his influence and legacy. As you always said, Dad, “You done good." Bill and Roze enjoyed many years together and provided a lifetime of wisdom and wonderful memories for their daughters. They shared a love of dancing and spent many years gliding across the dance floor in each other’s arms. May the heavens be filled with waltzes. He will be truly missed by his girls.
He is survived by five daughters, Judy Lewis, of Newton, IL; Brenda (Mark) Walker, of Altamont, IL; Mary (John) Pickowitz, of Mattoon, IL; Penny Lewis, of Tulsa, OK and Julie Pitcher of Gila, IL (special friend, Delbert Steffen); Grandchildren, Dustin Granby, Kristan (Jarad) Schackmann, Annette Christerson, Brad Walker, Angie (Leland) Brooke, Mallory Pickowitz, Sonny Pickowitz, Sam Pickowitz, Gary Pickowitz, and Lucas Pitcher; great grandchildren, Owen Schackmann, Liam Schackmann, Brittni York, Brenna York, Kayli Brooke, Kendall Brooke and a grand dog Cletus.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son-in-law Ben Pitcher; 3 sisters Allene (Harley) Stockwell, Marie (Claude) Shamhart and Wilma (Paul) Jones.
