Richard Paul Hankins, Sr, 85 of Shumway, passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2013 in his home.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at Hall Funeral Chapel in Effingham with Rev. Dr. James F. Wright officiating. Burial is in Oakridge Cemetery in Effingham. Visitation is from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Wednesday morning. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Lincolnland Hospice of Mattoon.

Richard was born on December 6, 1927, the son of John and Florence Young Hankins in Effingham County, Illinois. He graduated from Effingham High School in 1945 and then joined the United States Navy and served in the Navy Seabees, Construction Battalion on Guam from June 6, 1945 till August 17, 1946. Richard married Elaine Richter on June 1, 1947 and she passed away on May 8, 2001. He worked at Steven’s Hardware, Morehouse and Wells in Decatur from 1948 to 1957, farmed in the Shumway area from 1958 to 2006. On April 1, 2006 he married Virginia Shepherd and she survives.

Survivors include, wife; Virginia, children; Rick (Dorothy) Hankins of Shumway and Judy (Charles) Voelker of Altamont, grandchildren; Todd (Denise), Troy (Lisa) Voelker, Trevor Voelker (friend, Tiffany), Timmerle (Kyle) Scholes, Paula (Aaron) Tripp and Chad (Christy) Hankins, step-children; Jimmy (Derenda) Shepherd, Cathy (Don) Selph, Mary (Steve) Benoit, step-grandchildren; Ashley (Adam) Lundy, Chris (Sherri) Selph, Clint (Denise) Selph, Cassie (David) Brantly, Colton (Courtney) Selph, Kelsey (Orlando) Cano, Jeff Benoit, great-grandchildren; Myah Buerk, Claire, Hayden, Calvin, Elaine and Wade Voelker, Cole Jennings, Aubrey Scholes, Ciara, Dillon, Cooper, and Laila Hankins, step-great-grandchildren; Attison, Arrington, and Anndolyn Lundy, Marcella, Amanda, Catherine and Audry Selph, Aspen and Cash Harris, Macy Brantly, great-great-grandchildren; Lathyn and Kendall, brother-in-law; Fred Richter and sister-in-law; Mitzie (Norman) Tutwiler.

Richard enjoyed traveling, camping, RC airplanes, playing the dobro, coronet, guitar, dulcimer and woodworking. He was a member of the Effingham County RC Sportflyers, FMCA and the Effingham County Farm Bureau.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife; Elaine, brother; Raymond, sister-in-law’s Lois Hankins and Leila Richter, mother and father-in-law; Lewis and Effie Richter and step-father; Thomas Culbertson.
