Harold Hampton Harrell, 85, of Altamont passed away at Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis in the early morning on Monday, October 28, 2013.
 
A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m., Friday, November 1, 2013 at Arborcrest Memorial Park, rural Effingham with military rites conducted by Grobengieser-Fischer American Legion Post #512. Memorial contributions be made to the American Legion Post #512, 205 S. 4th St, Altamont, IL 62411. Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont is in charge of arrangements.
 
Mr. Harrell was born on Saturday, December 31, 1927 in Effingham County, to Wade Hampton and Hester (Smith) Harrell. He graduated from Altamont High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army at the end of WWII. He served in the 1st Cavalry Division in occupied Japan. He then attended Eastern Illinois University, Charleston and was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity. He married Dolores Brendal in 1951; they divorced. He worked in asphalt road construction and for World Color Press and had maintained a lifelong interest in plants and gardening.
 
He is survived by his four children and their spouses: Cynthia Harrell Felts (Dr. James A. Felts) of Rolla, MO; Joan Harrell Hamilton (Dr. Robert Hamilton) of Wetmore, CO; Maribeth Harrell Whitsell \(David Whitsell) of Marion, IL; and Harold H. Harrell (Melissa Hope Harrell) of Altamont, IL. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Genevieve Felts Meyer (Aaron Meyer) of Dyersburg, TN; Anne Felts (Wes Trueblood) of San Antonio, TX; Libby Felts James (Clayton James) of Longmont, CO; Sarah Hanson VanVooren (Aaron VanVooren) of Carbondale, IL; Allie Hanson Tanner (Seth Tanner) of Marion, IL; and Tyler Harrell of Carterville, IL and 3 great grandchildren; Danica Anne Meyer, Emma Jean Tanner, and Hayden Hampton Harrell.
