Steven Reed (87) of Altamont

Steven Reed, 87, of Altamont, formerly of Beecher City, died at 11:14am Friday, July 19, 2013 in Effingham Surgical Partners in Effingham.

Steve was born November 16, 1925 in Loudon Township, Fayette County, IL the son of Cleve and Kathryn Durbin Reed.  At age seventeen, Steve went to work at Inland Steel Co. in Indiana Harbor, IN shortly before joining the United States Navy serving honorably in the South Pacific during WWII.  Upon returning home, he farmed while being the owner/operator of Reed Building Service in Beecher City.  Steve was a life member and former Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7676 of Altamont, IL.  He married Berneice (Holding) Durbin on January 8, 1983 in Strasburg, IL.

Surviving him are his wife Berneice; children: Judy (Ed) Hanley of Moweaqua, IL, James (Cheryl) Reed of Beecher City, Michael (Patty) Reed of Stewardson, IL, Sue Livingston of Neoga, IL, Dennis Reed of Beecher City, Bradley (Donna) Reed of Beecher City, Glen Reed of Shumway, IL, Barbara (Cary) Storm of Stewardson, IL, Connie (David) Birch of Louisville, IL, Joyce (Tim) Fuesting of Thorntown, IN,  Richard Reed of Effingham, IL, Roger Reed of Effingham, IL  and Ronald (Becky ) Reed of Beecher City; twenty-three grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren and one great great grandson.  Upon marrying Berneice  Durbin, Steve was blessed with an additional seven children: Lloyd (Mary) Durbin of Stewardson, IL, Fred (Pauline) Durbin of Strasburg, IL, David (Clara Ann)  Durbin of Effingham, IL , Gary (Deanna) Durbin of Gays, IL, Frieda (Guy) Juhnke of Effingham, IL, Marilyn (Kenneth) Kessler of Stewardson, IL and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great- great grandchildren.  Steve leaves behind: one sibling Alfred “Pete” (Wilma) Reed of Shumway, IL, sisters-in-law: Irene Reed of St. Elmo, IL and Evelyn Reed of Altamont, IL.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Mary Reed, son Gary Reed, son-in-law David Livingston; grandsons:  Gregory Todd Hanley, Troy Durbin and Paul Durbin, great-grandchildren: Brittany Butler and Jacob Henkleman; great- great grandson Aidan  Atkins, sister Madonna  (Eugene) Paldy; brothers: Joe (Bessie) Reed, Gene Reed, Preslie Reed, Leslie Reed, Ray Reed and two sisters in infancy.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM Friday, July 26, 2013 in Springhill Cemetery in Loudon Township, rural Beecher City with military rites by Altamont V.F.W. Post # 7676.  Lloyd Durbin will officiate.  In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Disabled American Veterans.  Arrangements are entrusted to Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Beecher City.  Online condolences may be directed to the family at www.lockartgreenfuneralhome.com
