Gerald Mette (72) of rural Effingham

GERALD LEE METTE 72, of rural Effingham, Illinois, passed away at 8:28 A.M., Friday, July 12, 2013, in the St. John’s Hospital of Springfield, Illinois.

Gerald was born December 19, 1940, in Effingham County, Illinois, the son of August and Leona ( Kroeger ) Mette. He attended the St. Michael, The Archangel Church of Sigel, IL and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Effingham, Illinois. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus in Effingham, IL, a member of the Teamsters Local and a member of the Effingham American Legion Post # 120 of Effingham, IL. Gerald served in the United States National Guard. He married Darlene Alcoke, October 24, 1964 in Teutopolis, IL and he was a retired Truck Driver for the Hogan Leasing Company and he was a retired farmer. Gerald loved to go dancing, listening to area bands and visiting with his family and friends.

Mr. Mette leaves two sons, Richard Mette and wife Kay of Sigel, IL and Steven G. Mette of Effingham, IL; one daughter, Cheryl Cornwell and husband David of Altamont, IL; a special friend, Diane Houghton of Effingham, IL; one brother, Tom Mette and wife Gail of Effingham, IL; three sisters, Mary Kathryn Bogemann and husband Larry of Springfield, OH, Barb Durdel and husband Joe of Sigel, IL, Janet Probst and husband Terry of Teutopolis, IL; sister-in-law, Margie Mette of Teutopolis, IL; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mr. Mette was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Mary Lynn Mette; one brother, Paul Mette and one brother-in-law, Carl Mihlbachler. Memorials may be made to the family, in care of Richard Mette, 140 County Rd.  300 North - Sigel, IL 62462.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday July 23, 2013, in the St. Michael, The Archangel Church of Sigel, IL with the Rev. Fr. Robert DeGrand of Sigel, and Sr. Pat Thies of Effingham, IL officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P. M. Monday, July 22, 2013, with a 6:00 P.M., Parish Wake Service and a Knights of Columbus Rosary immediately following the Wake Service. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s (Green Creek) Cemetery in Green Creek, IL, with Military services by the American Legion Post # 120 of Effingham, Illinois. The Swengel - O’Dell Funeral Home of Neoga, is in charge of arrangements.
