Richard "Toad" Therrien (70) of Newton

Richard “Toad Therrien, 70, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2013 at his home in Newton, Illinois surrounded by family.

The Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2013 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Newton, Illinois with Fr. Al Kemme celebrating the mass.  Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, July 12 at the Crain Funeral Home, Newton with a 7:30 p.m. Rosary Service.  Inurnment will be in the West Lawn Cemetery, Newton with military rites by Jasper Post No. 20 of the American Legion.

Richard “Toad” Therrien was born on July 5, 1942 in Orange, Massachusetts the son of Joseph E. and Mary E. Chiasson Therrien.  Toad served his country in the U.S. Navy for ten years.  As a machinist mate first class, he served in the Cuban Missile Crisis as part of the blockade and Vietnam.  Following his military service, Toad was an industrial painter and sandblaster receiving his first union card in 1974.  He worked at the Marathon Refinery, Robinson and the Newton Power Plant.  On September 15, 1979, Toad married Angie Alcoke in Newton, Illinois.  She survives.  He was a member and served for 33 years as the treasurer for Local 1705 of the Painters and Allied Trades International Union, Robinson, a division of District Council 58, South Central Illinois AFL-CIO Collinsville, Illinois.  Toad was a loyal New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan.  He loved the challenge of fixing things, helping others in need, and being a true friend.  He kept in contact with shipmates from his time on the USS Charles H. Roan because “once a friend, always a friend.”  He loved children and laughing with his wife, Angie.

Toad will be loved and remembered by his wife of thirty-three years, Angie Therrien of Newton, IL; nieces and nephews, Sylvia Winslow, husband Carl of Comstock ,NY, Joan Smith, husband Peter of Milton, Vermont, Sue Chiasson, friend Joe Fantozzi of Royalston, MA, Joe Chiasson of Watertown, MA, Mike Chiasson, wife Barb of Robinson, IL,  Peter Chiasson, wife Agnes of Robinson, IL, David Chiasson, wife Velda of Robinson, IL, LuAnn Brault, husband David of Athol, MA, Bobby Boudreau of Orange, MA and Steve Boudreau of Orange, MA, Jason Holstrum, wife Kim of Olney, IL and Mark Holstrum, friend Lauren of Olney, IL;  sister-in-law and brother-in-law Becky Holstrum, husband Jim of Olney, IL, fifty plus great and great-great nieces and nephews, and aunt and uncle by marriage Betty and Bob Carson of Newton, IL.

His parents, brothers Leo Chiasson, Franny Therrien, Adlore Therrien, Leon Therrien, sister Delia Boudreau, nephew Jack Chiasson, brother-in-law Alfred “Tic” Boudreau and sister-in-law Edna Chiasson preceded him in death.

Memorial gifts for Toad may be made to either the Hospice of Lincoln Land or to the Jasper County Cancer Support Group.
