Kathryn Cox (90) of Fresno, California, formerly of Jasper County

Kathryn Cox passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 14, 2013, in Fresno, California, at the age of 90.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup, IL at 2:00 pm on Saturday June 22, 2013. Visitation will be for one hour before services at the funeral chapel. A reception will follow at the Gila Community Center.

Kathryn was born on September 25, 1922 in Jasper County, Illinois to Cuba F. and Mary Lucille (Griffith) Clark. Kathryn grew up in Grove Township, Jasper County, Illinois and she graduated from Greenup High School in 1939. After high school Kathryn went to beauty school and opened her own beauty shop in Jewett, Illinois. She married Allen F. Cox, a US Navy officer from Jewett, in 1943. Clark their only child was born in 1944 in Mattoon, IL. Following World War II the family settled in Los Angeles where Allen worked as a carpenter and Kathryn ran her own beauty shop. After retirement Kathryn and Allen spent summers in Jasper County and winters in California.Kathryn loved to cook and bake. She was an avid painter, preferring pastoral landscapes and depictions of country life. She also enjoyed quilting, making bonsai trees, gardening, and yoga. In her final years, she lived in Fresno, California, but continued to return to Jasper County every year.

Kathryn is survived by her grandson Christopher, of Ashburn, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her husband Allen, in 1973; son, Clark in 2010; sister, Dorothy, in 2008; and brother, Berl, in 2011.
