Joseph Henry Schneider, age 90 of Stringtown, Illinois, passed away Sunday, May 28, 2023, with his family at his bedside.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM – Saturday, June 3, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Stringtown, Illinois. Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Stringtown, Illinois. Visitation will be held 6:00 - 8:00 PM – Friday, June 2, 2023, at the church as well as 8:30 – 9:30 am prior to services on Saturday. In loving memory of Joseph, memorials may be made to Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach or St Jude Children’s Hospital. Arrangements are under the care of the Meyer Funeral Home in Olney, Illinois.

Joseph was born on May 12, 1933, in Richland County, Illinois, the son of Henry and Matilda (Kraus) Schneider. He married Ethel Ochs on May 23, 1961, at St Joseph Catholic Church in Stringtown, Illinois. They recently celebrated their 62nd anniversary.

Joseph owned and operated Schneider Repair in Stringtown, working beside his son Jim for well over fifty years. He never really retired and would go out to the shop even just to sit in the office or visit with customers. He loved working with his hands and repairing things. He loved music and listening to country and bluegrass. He and Ethel often attended dances, following the Stan Cardinal band. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Stringtown, and was a longtime organist there. He was a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of Moose. He supported 4-H and held small engine classes and had served as a county fair judge. He had great interest in history and genealogy and liked to read and collect articles of interest. He also collected antiques including tools and toy tractors, especially John Deere. Joseph loved his children and grandchildren, bragging on them and passing things down to them.

Joseph is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ethel Schneider; Children – Sister Janice Schneider, OSF of Springfield, Illinois, James “Jim” (Ruth Ann McDowell) of Stringtown, Illinois; Ellen (Paul) Steber of Claremont, Illinois; Myron (Mika) Schneider of Fort Collins, Colorado; Kathleen “Kathy” (Tom) Kocher of Claremont, Illinois; Raphael “Ray” (Jennifer) Schneider of Stringtown, Illinois; and Leon (Laura) Schneider of Erie, Colorado; Grandchildren – Ethan (Delaney Shryock), Colby, and Colleen Steber, Erin and Ian Schneider, Seth (Allison Herman), Brett, and Kaitlin Kocher, Casey and Alex Schneider, Hailey and Bryce Schneider; Numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, grandchildren Emily Steber, Isaac, Mathew, and Christina Schneider and special Aunt Sister Rita Schneider, OSF.
