Anthony “Toby” Jansen, 89, of Green Creek, passed away at 4:11 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, IL, surrounded by his loving family.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Green Creek. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Services are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham.

Toby was born on April 4, 1934, in Effingham to Ben and Eva (Funneman) Jansen. He served in the United States Army, stationed in Fort Huachuca, AZ from 1956 to 1958. He married Mardell Althoff on September 27, 1958.

Toby was a lifelong farmer. He enjoyed antique farm equipment, especially his AC tractor and doing demonstrations with his Case threshing machine at Pinckneyville’s thresherman shows. He and Mardell enjoyed dancing to the tunes of Benny and the Amigos over the years and time spent with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He served as a Douglas Township Trustee for 20 years, drove the Teutopolis kindergarten bus for the Green Creek area for 10 years and was a member of the DAV.

Toby is survived by his wife, Mardell of 64 years; children, Marlene (Steve) Hille, Karen (Tim) Fuesting, Joyce (Mark) Hoene, Linda (Mark, deceased) Harrington, Mark (Tammie Miller) Jansen, Richard (Vanessa Holland-Borries) Jansen, and Wayne (Tina Giller) Jansen; his 15 grandchildren, Jackie Mette, Brian Fuesting, Angie Brumleve, Sarah Lucht, Richard, Stephen, and Jonathan Hoene, Jake Harrington, Dean and Joseph Jansen, Megan Devore, Dustin Borries, Matt Jansen, Elizabeth Schewe, and Kelly Jansen; 33 great-grandchildren and 3 on the way; brother, Bernard and wife Helen Jansen; in-laws, Margaret Jansen, Judy Jansen, and Donald Beckman; and brother-in-law, Dave Althoff and wife Carol.

Toby was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Edward Jansen, Florence Schuette, Alice Hoene, Louisa Jansen, Virgil Jansen, Alma Steffen, Charlie Jansen, John Jansen, and Catherine Beckman; in-laws, Joseph and Clara Althoff; sister-in-law, Marlene Althoff; son-in-law, Mark “Harold” Harrington; and his 2 great-grandchildren, Henry Meino Lucht and Laila Angela Brumleve, who he is now holding in his arms.
