Mary E. McArtor, 93, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2023 surrounded by family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 24, 2023 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery in Effingham. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Mary was born on August 31, 1929, in Chicago, IL, the only child of Peter J. and Mary S. (Altar) Vesotas. Mary was proud of her Lithuanian Heritage. As a young girl, she loved to explore Chicago with her friends. She worked at Sears in downtown Chicago. Following her parents, Mary moved to Mason, IL, and fell in love with the boy next door, John S. McArtor. They married on April 19 ,1952, in Chicago, IL and were married for almost 63 years before his passing on January 11, 2015. Mary worked several places in the Effingham area, such as the Illinois Glove Factory, ASCS, Rural King, and Jerry’s Salvage. Mary was a loving devoted daughter, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church and the Ladies Sodality. Family and her faith were very important to her. She had a smile on her face, music in her heart, and a great sense of humor. Mary, alongside her husband, was also an avid volunteer, volunteering countless hours with RSVP. She also volunteered at the Effingham Senior Center, helping with the different programs offered.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Mary (Leslie) Rogers of Effingham and Cathy McArtor Simmons of Champaign; son, John P. (Diane) McArtor of Delaware; grandchildren, Jennifer (Floyd) Smith, Lisa (Travis) McKerrow, Krystle Simmons, Rick Simmons, John A. McArtor, and Mary R. McArtor; great-grandchildren, Kaden Rogers, Bianca Smith, and Leighton McKerrow; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, John.
