Bernard J. Miller (88) of Newton, Illinois passed away at 6:10 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at Aspen Creek in Effingham.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton with Fr. Al Kemme and Deacon Larry Miller celebrating mass. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton with full military rites by the Jasper Post #20 American Legion. Visitation will be held two hours before the mass with 4th degree Knights of Columbus honor guard. Memorials may be made to the Clay County Hospice or Alzheimer’s Research. Bernard J., better known as “Bernie” was born April 22, 1925 in Jasper County, the son of John and Edith (Kerner) Miller. He married Marjorie Rife May 1, 1945 and she preceded him in death October 16, 2004. Bernie served his country in the United States Army during WW II. Bernie and his brother Ralph opened Miller Brothers Texaco Station 1954 and they operated the business for over 30 years.Bernie was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton; 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Jasper Post #20 American Legion. Bernie was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed gardening.

Bernie is survived by five children, Mike (wife Gayla) Miller of Bluffton, SC, Steve (wife Shelia) Miller of Toledo, Barb Long of Covington, Ind., Mark (wife Jean) Miller of Yorkville, Bryan Miller of Pontiac; brother, Ralph (wife Rosalie) Miller of Newton; sister, Maxine Koontz of Robinson; sisters-in-law, Adeline Miller of Newton, Betty (husband Bob) Carson of Newton; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and on great-great-grandchild.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Maurice, Ed, Roscoe and a sister, Sarah Miller.
