John Lowell Tanner, 93 of Stewardson, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 18, 2022 at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham with burial in Stewardson Cemetery, Stewardson, with military rites. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to the time of service, Monday at the funeral home. John was born March 5, 1929, the son of Donald and Opal (Coble) Tanner. He married Eileen Moran on November 11, 1949 and she preceded him in death on December 22, 2017. John served with the United States Army during the Korean War. He was the owner/ operator of Tanner Feed and Supply, was a truck driver for Jones Trucking and Moomaw Trucking Companies, and maintenance at the Stewardson-Strasburg High School. John enjoyed and retired from farming at age 80. John was also a pumper, maintaining oil wells and retired from that at age 85.

He was a member of the Stewardson United Methodist Church, where he also served as maintenance supervisor at one time. He also had been a member of the Stewardson Lions Club.

John is survived by his three daughters, Sheryl Bartels of Effingham, Linda Tanner of Drumright, OK and Sandra (Ken) Kuhn of Effingham; two granddaughters, Miranda (Adam) Vortman of Bluffs and Jennifer (Scott) Sporleder of Farina; six great-grandchildren, Leighton, Tanner, Lillian and Trenton Sporleder, Blake and Connor Vortman; sister, Ruth Nugent of Mesa, Arizona; sister-in-law, Janet Moran of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews also survive.

John was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Harold Tanner and brother-in-law, Cliff Nugent.
